Mirabella glanced at the invitation lying on the coffee table but didn't bother picking it up. Instead, she kept her eyes on Jaime, waiting for him to continue.
Jaime noticed that Mirabella wasn't even interested in looking at the invitation, nor did she ask any questions about it, which made him frown. Finally, he broke the silence, "This is an invitation from the Earl's estate, specifically asking Keir to attend the party tomorrow."
The mention of the Earl's estate made Mirabella's expression shift subtly. Just days ago, someone from the estate had come to "invite" her. Now, with an invitation sent to the Davis family, it seemed like Chester's invitation was just a cover—she was the real target. With Chester out of commission due to his injuries, she was the logical stand-in.
This must be why Jaime had the old butler call her back to the main house.
Mirabella pursed her lips slightly, then nodded, "Alright, I'll pass the invitation to Chester."
Jaime was taken aback; her straightforward response threw off the elaborate explanation he had prepared. He had dug into Jim's situation thoroughly. Although Jim was unfortunately still alive, he was unconscious, and Jaime planned to use this to pressure Mirabella into going in Jim's place.
He didn't expect her to agree so easily, not following the usual back-and-forth.
"Can Keir actually make it tomorrow?" Jaime asked, clearly skeptical.
Mirabella raised an eyebrow, countering, "Did the Earl's estate say attendance was mandatory?"
Jaime was at a loss for words.
