It was a simple breakfast. Lorraine picked up the cutlery and took a bite of food. Then, she frowned and looked at Lillian before eating the omelet.
Lillian ate the food deliciously. "The carrot salad isn't bad. It's tasty."
Stanley smiled and said, "It's more delicious than the one you make."
Upon seeing that Lillian and Stanley were having a great time, Matthew ate a piece of omelet and finished the oatmeal in a few bites.
Then, he checked Lorraine's backpack before filling up a water bottle. Once he had gotten everything ready, he carried her and walked out the door.
When they got into the car, Lorraine suddenly sighed. Matthew saw that she was acting like an adult. She actually knew how to sigh. He found it intriguing. "Lori, what's the matter? Why are you sighing?"
Lorraine seemed worried. "Grandma has a bad memory because she's old."
Matthew was confused. "I think that your grandma's memory is still quite good."
Lorraine shook her head. "She must have put the salt twice. The food was too salty."
…
Matthew was taken aback. When he heard his parents say that the salad was tasty, he didn't eat the salad on purpose because he wanted them to eat more. He didn't expect that it was too salty.
Lorraine continued, "When you weren't at home, Grandma would always talk about you, saying that you often put the salt twice. So, the food you make will always be salty.
"Recently, since you're back, the food Grandma made has always been delicious. I didn't expect her to put the salt twice again today."
Matthew felt sad. Perhaps it was because Lillian was always absent-minded when he was in prison.
Suddenly, Lorraine smiled smugly. "Dad, do you think I'm smart?"
Matthew didn't understand what she meant. "What do you mean?"
Lorraine said proudly, "The dish Grandma made can't be eaten because it was too salty. I was worried that Grandma would be sad, so I didn't tell her that the food wasn't delicious just now. Don't you think I'm smart?"
Matthew was at a loss for words. He had to admit that she was smart, but he felt a bit unhappy because he was the one who made the dish. Her words were hurtful.
What made him guilty was that his parents complimented his cooking. As he drove, he listened to Lorraine talking about what happened in kindergarten.
