Tracy blanked out for a moment as a new thought crossed her mind. Could Matthew be dead? Would that mean she had Rachel all to herself now?
She felt an unexpected wave of joy, but she quickly berated herself in her mind, "Do you have no shame, Tracy? Just the other day, Matthew saved you when you were inspecting the medicine in the warehouse. How could you celebrate his death? What kind of person are you?"
A wave of guilt washed over Tracy. The thoughts flashed through her mind in an instant, but by the time she came back to her senses, Rachel had already run off.
She caught up with Rachel just as she reached the elevator and noticed how distressed she looked. Rachel was on the verge of tears, so Tracy gently comforted, "Stay strong, Rae."
Tears welled up in Rachel's eyes, and she shook her head slightly.
She felt the weight of loss when she found out Fred was sick. She was heartbroken, wishing that she could find all the doctors in the world to keep him alive. Even though it was difficult before, she truly felt the heart-wrenching pain of losing someone this time. It was as if someone had stabbed her right in the heart—it hurt so much.
Seeing Rachel's misty eyes, Tracy couldn't come up with anything to say and felt a pang of sympathy. It was the first time she had seen Rachel cry as an adult. Tracy didn't expect Rachel to care so much about Matthew as she called him a pervert every time. "Are you really in love with Matthew, Rae?"
With teary eyes, Rachel looked puzzled. "Shouldn't I be?"
Tracy furrowed her brows together. "Y-You're the icy queen who's always indifferent to men. All those guys in Khoitwood try so hard to win you over, but you always just brush them off. How did you end up falling for Matthew? And with such strong feelings too?"
She used to believe that Rachel was only honoring her promise and repaying the favor for Matthew saving Fred. She never expected Rachel to be truly in love with him.
Besides Tracy, even Rachel's suitors at Khoitwood wouldn't believe it for a second if word got out.
Rachel blinked. Tears streamed down her cheek, over her chin, and onto the floor.
