“Stop!” Morine ordered under his breath.
The city defense soldiers at the front stopped, and the city defense soldiers behind naturally followed suit.
“Anne, keep guard here while I take two city defense soldiers to investigate. If I confirm that the bandits are the ones who took Dorodo’s residents, I’ll signal you with a flare!” Morine said to Anne.
Anne wanted to say something, but Morine had already headed that way with two city defense soldiers.
Morine did not take these 200 city defense soldiers with him because it would be too loud with so many people riding together. The bandits would notice them before they got close. It was why he approached so quietly with only two soldiers.
After confirming they were their targets, he could create chaos with his men to delay them while firing a flare to inform Anne to pursue them with the rest.
200 city defense soldiers and Anne were about three kilometers away from the camp.
Morine and two city defense soldiers were now about 500 meters away.
“Dismount. We’ll close in on foot!” Morine ordered.
“Yes!”
The two city defense soldiers answered under their breath. Then the three of them dismounted and approached the camp on foot, finding that it was indeed the camp of a stray mercenary regiment.
There were 40 or so men in the stray mercenary regiment. Morine found out the number of people in the stray mercenary regiment by counting the horses tied to the outskirts of the camp. These mercenaries were drinking and bragging around the fire, and the camp was bustling.
Morine and two city defense soldiers snuck in and found two dozen poor women sitting together tied up with ropes when they reached the center.
These poor women ranged from 11 or 12 years old to over 30. The 11 or 12-year-old girls had gone to work in the fields outside the city with the adults and were kidnapped because they failed to escape in time. Regardless of age, they were sobbing as if the sky had collapsed.
After confirming it, Morine ordered the two city defense soldiers beside him, “You set fire to all the tents. And you cut the horses‘ ropes and let them all go. Without them, these d*mn b*stards can’t escape!”
Morine crept closer to the women.
Morine‘s approach frightened the women. They showed expressions of horror and cried.
“Don’t be afraid. I’ve come to save you! I’m the commander-in-chief of Dorodo‘s city defense army, Morine Josef! I will cut your ropes but don‘t escape yet. Follow my instructions. Don’t worry. Someone will save you soon.”
