"Greetings to Your Grace the Duke!"
Guo Ruomei and Chu Lang had just followed Daohua into the backyard when they bumped right into Gu Jian. Aware of Gu Jian’s status, both swiftly paid their respects.
Gu Jian glanced at Guo Ruomei.
This was his first time meeting Xiaojiu’s former wife. He couldn’t be bothered to find out why they divorced. But Daohua was due to give birth in a little over a month, and he was quite pleased that Xiao Yeyang’s birth mother could come to take care of her at this time.
Even though he was a physician, there were things he had to avoid during childbirth. The midwives at home could not compare with the reassurance brought by Xiao Yeyang’s own mother.
Gu Jian ’hmm’ed and gestured for Guo Ruomei to rise, then gave Chu Lang a look-over. Without a word, he simply instructed Daohua, "Our guests have come from afar. Make sure they are treated well."
With that, he walked away.
Hearing the word ’guests’ from Gu Jian, Guo Ruomei’s face turned slightly bitter, but she felt a deep sense of satisfaction that Gu Jian had allowed her to visit.
If this were in Beijing, she probably would have had to meet her son and daughter-in-law from the outside, without much fanfare.
Chu Lang, on the other hand, showed no reaction. Putting aside his relation to Ruomei, his status at the Xiao Residence could barely qualify as a guest.
Worried that Guo Ruomei might feel that Gu Jian was being cold, Daohua quickly explained with a smile, "Mother, my master can be somewhat reclusive. Don’t be fooled by his stern face; he’s actually very kind. Once Mother and Uncle Chu have stayed in the residence for a while, you’ll understand."
Guo Ruomei smiled and nodded, then followed Daohua into the house along with Chu Lang.
Chu Lang surveyed the interior decorations and laughed, "I thought your life here in the barren lands of Xiliang, with scarce resources, would be tough. But it seems you’re living quite comfortably."
As he spoke, he picked up some fruit from the table and began to eat, "Glass in the windows, glass on the roof, fruit, and pastries to eat at will – your daily life here is even better than mine in Beijing."
"It’s funny; your mother-in-law was concerned about your tight living conditions, so she brought quite a few things with her. On our way, just dealing with bandits, I had to intervene twice."
Hearing about the bandits, Daohua immediately turned to Guo Ruomei, "Mother, are you both alright?"
Chu Lang chuckled from the side, "With me here, what could possibly go wrong?"
It was then that Daohua expressed her gratitude with a smile, "Thank you for your concern, Mother. Although Yeyang and I don’t lack food, the things you’ve brought must be some of the best, and now I can also enjoy them."
Guo Ruomei laughed, "The things I brought are a bit of a mix. Just let the maids note down what you like to eat and use, and I’ll bring more of it next time."
Without any pretense, Daohua smiled and nodded vigorously.
She knew her mother-in-law wanted to compensate Xiao Yeyang through her, so naturally, she wouldn’t refuse her kind intentions.
"Mother, you have no idea how tiring it has been for Xiao Yeyang since he arrived in Xiliang..."
Knowing that her mother-in-law wanted details about Xiao Yeyang, Daohua went on to talk all about matters related to him. Hearing how hard and busy Xiao Yeyang was, Guo Ruomei felt a heart full of sympathy.
Even Chu Lang fell into a rare silence after listening to the things Xiao Yeyang had done and the challenges he faced since arriving in Xiliang.
Daohua continued to share her difficulties until Guyu came in from outside, nodding at her to indicate that the yard was ready. She then concluded, "Mother, Uncle Chu, you’ve had a hard journey. The yard is ready; you should go and wash up and rest."
Saying this, she was about to get up and show them to their rooms.
Guo Ruomei quickly stopped her, "You’re heavily pregnant now; just let the maids take us there."
Daohua shook her head with a smile, "How could I? I’m not tired. It’s good for me to walk around a bit." fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Daohua insisted on personally escorting Guo Ruomei and Chu Lang to their allocated courtyard, ensuring everything was in order before leaving with a smile.
Chu Lang looked around the courtyard and the rooms, laughing, "This daughter-in-law of yours isn’t bad; she didn’t make us stay in the guesthouse."
Guo Ruomei chuckled, "Yiyi is a good girl. I just wonder... if Yeyang welcomes our visit or not?"
