Well, there was some difference between Thane and his father.

After his first affair, Mr. Cole had gotten a taste for it. Since then, he changed women more fréquently than he changed clothes.

Thane was different. Lily had been by his side for a year, and their relationship remained strong.

But who could say for sure?

He had once been just as devoted to me, yet he still cheated and changed his heart.

Perhaps it was only a matter of time. We couldn’t really talk about so–called devotion–mentioning it now would just be ironic.

Hearing Thane’s defense, Mr. Cole’s anger subsided and made a direct threat: “Don’t think that just because you’re running the company now, you can do whatever you want. Remember, you’re not my only son. There are others just as capable as you. If you can’t handle things, I can easily put another son in your position.”

With those words, Thane’s face went pale.

Romance was trivial. When it came to business interests, that’s when you saw someone’s

true heart.

I heard all this from outside the study door, then went downstairs and exchanged a glance with Mrs. Cole, who sat on the sofa.

We knew about this party ages ago. And that invitation on the coffee table? It wasn’t there by accident.

And Thane, having just been reprimanded, came downstairs only to see Marcus Cole walking in through the front door.

“Who asked you here?” Thane’s face darkened.

Marcus smiled smugly. “Dad says you’re useless, so he’s bringing me into the company.

We’ll manage it together from now on, my dear brother.”

I proposed divorce again. This time, I had leverage.

“Dad has already brought Marcus into the company to challenge you, and to help him establish his position, he’s transferred some shares to him. If you don’t divorce me, I’ll transfer all my shares to Marcus.”

Hearing my words, Thane’s eyes widened, as if he couldn’t believe I would be so ruthless.

“Sophie, after all our years together, can you really bear to see me left with nothing?”

Hearing him say this, I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Thane Cole, after all our years together, how could you bear to cheat on me?”

Mentioning Lily again made Thane look uncomfortable.

“It’s two different things.”

“But for me, it’s all the same thing!”

I took a deep breath and delivered my ultimatum: “You definitely don’t want to hand over everything you’ve worked so hard for, especially to your half–brother. Once he takes over, we all know how miserable you’ll be. So if you don’t want his shares to outweigh yours, agree to divorce me. Both children will stay with me, and you’ll buy all my shares at a premium. Then we’ll be done with each other. How’s that?”

I meant what I said–I wanted a divorce, but I wouldn’t leave empty–handed.

These shares, once liquidated, would be a substantial fortune. I couldn’t just give them up.

Thane laughed bitterly at this.

“Sophie, you’re so greedy.”

I returned his smile: “What/can I say? I learned from you.”
