Lily knew things were tense between me and Emily lately.
So after school, she stopped by a bakery to pick up a little cake-
She just wanted to cheer us up.
She didn’t see the car coming.
By the time I got to the hospital, they were already trying to resuscitate her.
The doctor pulled me aside and said,
“It’s critical.”
“There’s a new medical pod we could use–cutting edge, just arrived. But it’s pricey.”
I didn’t even blink.
“Do it. I don’t care how much it costs. Just save her.”
But when I got to the billing desk…
I didn’t have enough.
Emily had been running her own business for years.
Almost all our money was tied up on her end.
I barely had access to anything./
So I gritted my teeth, signed the DNR,
and started calling her like crazy.
Dozens of calls. Not a single answer.
Finally, I got through to one of her coworkers.

Chapter 1
That’s when her assistant, Alan, picked up.
“Hey Lucas… Emily said she’ll talk when she gets home. Whatever it is, it can wait.”
“Her daughter is in the ER!”
“She’s dying! She needs surgery–we need the money now!”
I could hear music and laughter in the background.
A party.
But Lily was slipping away, and I didn’t care about any of that.
I just kept shouting her name.
Finally, after what felt like forever, she picked up.
“I’m busy. Don’t bother me.”
Click.
I waited outside the OR all night.
She never called back.
I reached out to every friend, every relative.
Begged for help.
But it was too late.
We couldn’t afford the pod.
Lily didn’t make it.
Right before she slipped away, she looked up at me and smiled-
“Don’t blame Mommy, Dáddy… Lily doesn’t blame her…”
