Chapter 8
By the time she finally came back, it was after hours.
She looked worn out.
“Sorry, babe. I didn’t mean to keep you waiting.”
“It’s fine. I kept myself busy.”
I wasn’t just sitting around.
I had Jack send me the company’s most recent client files so I could get a head start.
Maybe it was just me, but something about Emily’s tone had changed.
There was a strange familiarity to it–like I almost didn’t recognize her.
She hadn’t called me babe in months.
We hadn’t talked this calmly in even longer.
“What do you want for dinner? I’ll take you out.”
She started packing up.
The divorce papers I gave her at lunch were still sitting on her desk.
She hadn’t even looked at them.
After all this time, I knew how she operated.
Whenever she felt guilty, she wouldn’t apologize directly.
She’d just act extra nice and pretend like nothing ever happened.
Most of the time, I’d let it slide.
But not this time.

Chapter 8
Even though I still couldn’t wrap my head around how she stayed so calm after our daughter’s death…
I knew this version of her wasn’t real.
It was just temporary.
“Emily. Don’t you have anything you want to say to me?”
“How about seafood tonight? You’ve always loved crab, right?”
She was dodging again.
She reached out like she wanted to hold my hand, but I stepped away.
“I’ll wait for you downstairs.”
Before I could say anything else, she grabbed her purse and rushed out.
She wasn’t giving me the silent treatment like she used to.
She knew this time, there was no coming back from it.
On my way out, I ran into a few coworkers.
They all called me “bro–in–law” like it was some kind of joke.
I gave a half–hearted nod.
One of them leaned in and said,
“Emily introduced you earlier–said you’ve known each other forever, grew up together, went to school together, started the company together…”
Their eyes were full of admiration.
I felt nothing but discomfort.
I didn’t care if they knew who I was.
