Chapter 10
Emily made me a bowl of vegetable soup.
And honestly, she wasn’t great at cooking.
The veggies weren’t even washed properly, the rice was undercooked, and it tasted
overwhelmingly like cheap seasoning.
I took a small sip, but that was all.
Seeing that, Emily tasted it herself, and immediately spat it out.
“Lucas, I’m so sorry, I’ll make you something else.”
“No need.”
I gave a half–hearted smile and handed her the divorce papers again.
“You prepared these, so I’ll just sign them.
“Let’s pick a time to file for the divorce, okay?”
Emily carefully took the papers, then quickly tried to explain that it was her friend’s divorce papers, and she was just helping her out.
But the terms were clear–how could it be her friend’s papers if they had our home’s property details?
She came up with a bunch of lies, but eventually, she fell silent.
“I messed up, Lucas. I really get it now.”
“We can go back to how we were, okay?”
She looked down and apologized.
If this were before, seeing her like this would’ve made me feel guilty.

But this time, I didn’t want to lie to myself anymore.
And I couldn’t.
Because losing our daughter felt like the world had come crashing down.
The soup in the pot was still steaming.
価格
I understood why Emily made vegetable soup for me.
This was the dish she learned to cook when I proposed to her.
She had never been good in the kitchen.
Back when we were getting married, she told me she couldn’t bear to let me cook every day.
She promised she’d learn to cook for me.
But in the ten years we were together, that was the only time she cooked for me.
It seemed so out of reach that I could hardly believe it.
“You remember when you made me this vegetable soup? It was really good.”
I spoke up first.
Emily, still holding the divorce papers tightly in her hand, finally looked up at me.
I fought back the tears as I said,
