Chapter 12
“I’m sorry. I apologize on Emily’s behalf.”
I bowed, gritting my teeth against the pain in my back.
The blood had soaked through the bandage again.
If Jack hadn’t been there to support me, I probably couldn’t even have stood up straight.
The clients saw how badly I was hurt and didn’t press the issue any further.
Though the situation was resolved,
Emily still had to stay a few more days.
When we left, the police gave us a few minutes alone.
I wanted to refuse, but Emily begged me to stay.
The scratches on her face made her look nothing like the proud woman she used to be.
After a long silence, I spoke first.
“Emily, it’s over between us.‘
She looked at me, her lips trembling, and tried to say something but didn’t know what.
As I turned to leave, she said her final apology.
For the next month, I didn’t hear from Emily.
I threw myself into work, wrapping up the projects I had in hand and earning a fair
amount.
What I didn’t expect was that my proposal caught Mr. Johnson’s attention.
He waved his hand and hired me for his company.

That night, at a company dinner, Emily suddenly showed up.
My new coworkers started whispering, and I didn’t want to make a scene.
So, I came up with an excuse to step outside.
Naturally, Emily followed me.
The alcohol smell had mostly worn off by now,
and that’s when I realized how bad Emily looked.
Her clothes were dirty, and her eyes were swollen.
She started telling me what had happened over the past month, but I didn’t care.
It was clear the company was in financial trouble and couldn’t operate much longer.
“So what?”
I stopped walking and looked at the defeated Emily.
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she told me to wait right there.
A few minutes later, she handed me a stack of papers.
“Lucas, all the property documents are here. We’re getting divorced.”
After she emptied her hands, she tried to hug me again.
I instinctively pulled away.
She didn’t say anything else–just cried as she walked away.
A month later, I met her at the civil affairs office.
We easily got the divorce certificate.

Chapter 12
When it came time to divide the property, I told them to leave everything to me.
But I didn’t take it all.
I only took my share, the part that was rightfully mine.
The rest, I heard, was enough to pay off the company’s debts.
