Chapter 4
The next day, I met with the buyer at the mandrake garden.
“Vivianne, are you really sure you want to sell the mandrake garden to me?”
I smiled and looked out over the vast, mandrake–filled mountain.
“What’s to be unsure about?”
I was talking happily with the buyer when I saw a familiar group coming down the
mountain.
Nathaniel looked exhausted, his eyes sunken as if he had been up there all night.
But when he saw me, his face lit up, and his voice held a hint of joy.
“Vivianne, what are you doing here?”
Our son’s tired face broke into a smile, quietly calling out, “Mom.”
I didn’t answer him, continuing to chat with the buyer.
“The contract’s already signed.”
“The mandrake garden will officially belong to you tomorrow.”
Nathaniel’s expression froze in disbelief.
“You’re selling the mandrake garden?”
I gave him a puzzled look and nodded.
“Yeah, I sold it.‘

“It’s my personal property!”
“Doesn’t involve Nathaniel at all, does it?”
Chapter 4
Our son’s eyes welled up, and he grabbed Nathaniel’s sleeve, shaking it as if urging him to
stop me.
Nathaniel’s face turned dark as he clenched his fists, staring at me as if trying to read my
mind.
“Vivianne, stop playing games. I know how much the mandrake garden means to you.”
“If this is to get a rise out of me, you’ve succeeded.”
The buyer looked between Nathaniel and me, unsure what to say.
“Vivianne, who is this?”
I casually introduced him.
“My ex–husband.”
Then, I added,
“Don’t worry. The contract will go through as planned.”
After the buyer left, Nathaniel grabbed my wrist.

“Vivianne, what’s going on? Why are you selling the mandrake garden?”
I pulled my wrist away and asked him in return,
“Why not sell it?”
“You said it yourself–one mandrake isn’t worth much.”
“So what’s the value of an entire mountain of them?”
I hid the emotions welling up inside me and calmly responded,
“Stop talking about the mandrake as a symbol of love.”
“Nathaniel, it’s been ten years. It’s time we let go.”

Chapter 4
Nathaniel’s pupils dilated.
His voice became hoarse.
Vivianne, what happened to you?”
“I know how important the Seven–Star mandrake is to you.”
“I’ve already sent people to find a way to cultivate it.”
“I’ll have a new Seven–Star mandrake soon.”
