I quickly took a cab and rushed to the hospital.
As soon as the attending doctor saw me, he smiled and greeted me.
"Mr. Gebb, you're here. Why don't you go in and see Lana?"
I nodded and followed the doctor into the ward. As soon as I walked in, I spotted Lana lying on the hospital bed, holding the doll that I had bought for her last time.
When she saw me, her face lit up with joy. She clapped her hands and excitedly called out, "Samuel, you've finally come to see me!"
I smiled and walked over to her side. I pulled over a chair and sat down, looking at her gently and warmly as I asked, "How have you been these past few days? Did you take your medicine on time?"
Lana nodded eagerly, pulling my hand and handing me several pieces of candy.
"I've been good! Mr. Harmon was worried that the medicine would taste bad, so he bought me lots of candy. But I didn't eat them because I wanted to share them with you!
"Samuel, I'm going to have surgery soon, but I'm not scared at all. Mr. Harmon said that I'll be better after the surgery. Then, I'll be able to go anywhere I want and do anything I like!"
Looking at Lana's innocent and cheerful face, my heart tightened, and my eyes almost filled with tears.
For children like her, undergoing surgery felt like stepping into the unknown, like walking into the hands of death. No one could predict whether they would come out of it alive.
I gently touched Lana's forehead and smiled softly. "You're such a good girl, Lana. After your surgery, how about I take you out for a big meal? You can eat whatever you want, and I'll even take you wherever you want to go. Okay?"
Lana's bright eyes twinkled as she clapped her hands with excitement.
"Okay! Samuel, you're the best!"
I smiled and patted her head before picking up the kettle to get some water.
