Abigail's gaze grew increasingly serious as she looked at me. It felt as though she was trying to determine whether I was lying.
I kept silent and lowered my head, preparing myself for the possibility that she might insist I attend the gathering.
While I was deliberating over what excuse I could think of to fool her into letting me off the hook, she suddenly nodded gently and said softly, "Alright. Forget it if you really don't want to go."
I glanced up at her and noticed that the discontent in her expression had vanished and was replaced by a serene gentleness. She looked at me with a smile like she was a loving wife.
I found it strange and asked, "You're… not angry?"
Abigail surprisingly laughed and asked puzzledly, "Why should I be angry with you? It's just a casual gathering. You don't have to go if you don't feel like it."
I was deeply suspicious. Was she just lulling me into a false sense of security before delivering a harsh lesson?
The way she treated me left me feeling as if she was gearing up to punish me. Why else would she be so calm when I had gone against her wishes multiple times today?
That was so strange.
It was almost time to start work. I picked up the shrimp tacos she had bought and stood up. "I'll have to get to work. I have to go now."
Abigail nodded gently and smiled as she said, "Go ahead. I have things to take care of too."
With that, she got up and left.
I glanced at her figure momentarily and stepped into the elevator without looking back.
