Abigail's remark sent a chill down my spine. I was at a loss for how to respond. Her tone was more like blaming me than a simple question.
I acted as though I didn't understand her and replied, "Okay."
Abigail had clearly lost interest in hearing anything else from me. She hung up right after.
I put my phone away and looked up to see Sophia staring at me with a complicated expression.
"Samuel, did Abigail give you a hard time?" she asked.
I smiled and said, "Why do you ask?"
Sophia's face was filled with anger. She fumed, "Of course she did! Every time something makes it to the headline, she always makes things difficult for you. It's because you got involved with her little—"
She suddenly stopped halfway through her sentence. Her face flushed, and she looked at me awkwardly as she apologized. "Sorry, Samuel. I… I didn't mean it that way."
I smiled and shook my head. "Why are you apologizing to me? Everyone already knows it anyway."
It felt like my misery had truly begun the day I married Abigail.
Joshua was never as harmless as he appeared. On the surface, he acted like he followed Abigail's every command, but it was all an illusion. He was a master at masking himself, portraying himself as an innocent victim while shifting all the blame onto me.
No matter how I tried to explain, Abigail would never listen. The thing she told me most often was, "I only believe what I see with my own eyes."
At first, I felt like I'd been struck by lightning. I thought maybe I wasn't explaining myself clearly or that I wasn't sincere enough.
