There were so many sides of Abigail that I had never seen before, so many that I didn't dare dwell on what she might be like in front of other men.
I feared that I wouldn't be able to handle it, that I'd collapse under the weight of those thoughts. Even though our feelings for each other were gone, at least I knew they were once there.
After everything was over, she left my room. She went to the bathroom to wash up and then left the house.
Half an hour later, she came back. She looked at me with an unusually gentle expression as she handed me a warm glass of milk and some snacks I used to love.
I looked at her in surprise and asked hesitantly, "Did you… just go out to buy these for me?"
She smiled and nodded. "You're not feeling well, so I thought buying you something you like might make you feel better."
Having said that, she opened the package and handed the snacks to me. I gave her a surprised look, hesitated for a moment, and eventually started eating.
Although I didn't have much of an appetite just then, I didn't want to disappoint her. If she were dissatisfied with my actions, the days ahead would probably be torturous.
Seeing me eating the snacks she bought, her mood improved significantly. She rested her chin on her hand and watched me with a tender look in her eyes.
I remembered that Abigail used to look at me like this all the time. She would say that I was the man she loved the most and that she could never get tired of watching me.
Back then, I found her absolutely adorable and gentle and wanted nothing more than to hold her in my embrace, spoil and cherish her, and never to part with her for a single moment.
Yet now, the way she looked at me only made me feel deeply uncomfortable. I wanted to escape. I didn't want to be anywhere near her. I longed to pursue the kind of life I desired.
"Samuel, do you remember how we used to get along?" Abigail suddenly asked me with a smile.
I looked at her and replied, "I do. We used to take Kayla to the amusement park a lot."
It was a simple statement that caused her expression to shift slightly.
