When Joshua reached out to Abigail, it was always for the same reasons.
The first reason was to have her help him spend his money. The second was his sense that he was no longer the center of attention, and he wanted her to come and shower him with affection to reinforce their bond.
After so many years, I had grown used to these tiresome games.
Even if Joshua appeared in front of me today and took Abigail away, I wouldn't feel the slightest bit of jealousy or discomfort. In fact, if Abigail didn't go to him, I'd even feel a flicker of curiosity.
I wondered what exactly Joshua had done this time to make Abigail so repulsed with him, to the point where she wouldn't even want to see her favorite little plaything.
My curiosity was fleeting. It was nothing more. I had no intention of prying further. After all, it had nothing to do with me, and asking too much might even become annoying.
After hearing what I said, Abigail frowned and finally picked up the call.
"What is it?" Her voice was particularly cold, as if the person on the other end wasn't her lover but merely an employee or subordinate, someone she had no desire to care about.
Joshua's voice that rang out over the line was brimming with self-pity, and it almost sounded like he was sobbing as he said, "Abigail, I… My foot was hurt by a model from the props department. It hurts so much. Can you come to the hospital and see me?"
But Abigail's attention didn't seem to be on the call. Her eyes kept drifting toward me, as if the moment she hung up, she would pounce on me without hesitation.
Her behavior confused me. What exactly was Abigail thinking? What was she planning? Why had she been acting so strangely lately?
Wasn't Joshua the one she loved the most? Why did she act like she didn't care at all?
No matter how I thought about it, I couldn't make sense of it.
Abigail didn't seem interested in clarifying things for me. She merely glanced at me and replied offhandedly, "Which hospital are you at?"
