After we were done with visiting Lana, Abigail's mood seemed much better than before.
Luke drove us home. Abigail sat beside me and chatted nonstop. Meanwhile, Luke remained completely silent.
Occasionally, I noticed him shooting irritated glances at me through the rearview mirror. His eyes were filled with resentment.
I knew exactly why he hated me. It was because the relationship between Abigail and me had been improving lately. He probably felt like his chance with her was slipping away, and that frustration was now directed squarely at me.
But honestly, I couldn't be bothered to deal with someone like Luke. People like him only know how to act tough with those they perceive as weak. Since he clearly didn't think much of me, I had no reason to waste my energy on him.
After a while, Abigail seemed to grow tired. She leaned her head on my shoulder and, little by little, drifted off to sleep.
Seeing this, Luke's expression twisted in pure rage. He gripped the steering wheel tightly. With gritted teeth, he muttered in a low, threatening voice, "Samuel, listen carefully. You'd better never do anything to betray Abigail. If you do, I'll be the first one to come for you."
What he said immediately shifted my mood.
I found Luke amusing at this point. I couldn't help but let out a cold chuckle and asked, "Luke, I have a question for you."
Luke scowled and glanced at me from the rearview mirror. "What do you want to ask?" he replied coldly.
Still smiling, I shook my head and asked, "In what capacity are you speaking to me right now?"
Silence. Pure, palpable silence.
