The Marriage She Turned into War novel Chapter 310

Abigail always claimed that I was the one she loved, yet once again, she chose Joshua.

Her gaze flickered briefly before she forced back tears and offered me a tight, almost apologetic smile. "You go ahead and eat. I have some urgent business at the office. Don't wait up for me, okay?"

With that, she grabbed her bag and hurried out the door.

I stood there, watching her leave, feeling ridiculous.

What kind of fool was I to even have the slightest bit of hope?

I knew, deep down, that Joshua was her priority. He always had been. So why did I keep setting myself up to get hurt, trying to compete for something I knew I'd never win?

Shaking my head, I pushed the thought aside. It didn't matter anymore. As long as I could keep doing my best and stay focused, that was all that counted.

After breakfast, I washed the dishes and went back to my office to work on some new songs. As I sat down, my phone pinged with a calendar reminder.

My birthday was in a week.

I couldn't help but remember how, for Joshua's birthday, Abigail had gifted him an extravagant, custom-made brooch worth a hundred thousand dollars.

What would she do for mine?

Later that evening, Abigail sent me a text saying she'd be late and that I shouldn't wait for her to eat. By the time she got home, it was late, and the faint smell of antiseptic clung to her clothes.

It didn't take much to figure out where she'd been.

I decided to test her. "Abigail, you've been working late almost every night this week. What's going on at the office that needs your constant attention?"

Her expression faltered for just a moment before she forced a casual smile. "Oh, it's just a big project. Some of the team is inexperienced, so I've been closely monitoring things."

"Is that so?" I said, my tone even. "Then why do your clothes smell like disinfectant? It's kind of strong, you know."
