I picked up the food that Sophia had left on the ground and motioned to her with a smile. "Since you're already here, come in and sit down. There's no need to avoid me."
Sophia was stunned by my words, but after a moment, she quickly followed me into the hospital room.
As soon as she sat down, she looked slightly embarrassed and said, "Samuel, I'm really sorry… I didn't mean to disturb you. I was just worried about you and wanted to check on how you're doing. Now that I know you're okay, I can rest easy."
Hearing her genuine concern, I suddenly felt guilty for losing my temper with her the other day.
I immediately apologized, "I'm sorry, Sophia. I let my emotions get the better of me that day. I promise it won't happen again."
She looked at me with surprise, then smiled and nodded. "Samuel, everyone has bad days. I can understand. It's fine. If you need anything in the future, just let me know. As long as it's something I can do, I'll do my best to help you, alright?
Hearing this, I smiled and said, "Thank you."
She took out an apple and started peeling it for me.
Out of nowhere, her eyes reddened. She then covered her face and began sobbing.
Startled, I looked at her and asked, "What's wrong? Why are you crying all of a sudden? If there's something bothering you, just tell me. I might be able to help."
She wiped her tears, looking at me with a mix of sadness and frustration. "It's nothing. I just feel so bad for you, Samuel. You're such a good person. Why does life have to be so unfair to you? I can't stand seeing you going through this. If I could do something, I'd help you divorce Abigail right away!"
Sophia was an empathetic person, and she genuinely sympathized with my struggles. Seeing my recent hardships, she couldn't help but feel deeply for me.
