The Mates of Monsters novel Chapter 82

The meeting hall chairs are empty, but a small group waits by the podium. Alpha LeLoup and Alpha Lovegreen are two of them, standing a tad closer than they usually would, and I wonder if they've finally resolved their feud. Aurora and I wait back as David approaches with the agreement. It will be validated and kept here in some confidential vault, I'm sure.

"Go on and say it—a boy or girl?"

"I'm having a girl."

"Well there you go," she says, "all your hard work paid off for yourself. It all worked out in the end."

I shrug. "Who knows, maybe I'll have a boy after her."

"Already planning the next baby? Aren't you just the perfect Luna? I mean, everyone around here already looks at you like you invented the lightbulb, you don't have anything left to prove."

"I have to make sure the pack is safe. Anything could happen—I pray that it won't—but the more heirs there are, the better I'll feel."

"I hope David isn't putting that in your—"

"No. Of course not," I insist. "He's barely making it through this first one. I see the doctor every other day some weeks."

"That's crazy, but it shows how much he loves you."

I sigh. "I'm not upset, obviously. I love how much he loves me; I just wish he would relax for his own sake."

"Once he sees how well this baby goes, maybe he'll start to relax with your next."

David peers over and tells me 'the agreement is valid' with just a look. The men shake hands, and after David has thanked them for their time, he returns to me. I give Aurora a temporary goodbye as our designated seats for the welcome meeting are not together. Like the first time, David and I sit at the bottom near the center.

I take my place, scrunching and stretching my feet under the desk once I discreetly abandon my shoes. "I can't believe that's it. It seems almost too easy."

His hand rubs up and down my thigh. "We deserve easy right now."

"So it will be," I manifest.

"I'm happy that you're here with me."

"I know. You can't fool me with that Alpha ego."

David rests his arm along the back of my seat. "How about we take it easy this time? No sabotaging or games or drama."

"Hmm. I'll try my best," I say.

I sit upright in bed with my laptop sitting on my blanket-covered legs. David is finishing up in the bathroom as I fill him in on Jeremy's latest email—an update about his life.

"He says they have breakfast and dinner together most days, and Dreier still wants him to move into his bedroom, but Jeremy says he isn't sure. Oh, and next month he might meet Dreier's mother. He says he doesn't want to because he knows the mother is iffy about her son being mated to another man, but he says Dreier has been working on it with her."

David shuts off the bathroom light. "It's a good sign that his mother is willing to listen to him."
