Josiah began, “Since I’m close with your grandpa and your mom looked up to me as a dad, I want to deepen our relationship by having you marry Noah. Before your mom and grandpa passed on, they’d already arranged for you to marry Noah.”
“I was planning for Noah to come back abroad and propose to you, but things didn’t go as planned. Instead of marrying Amy, you end up with Finley. To be clear, Amy was always meant to be Finley’s bride. So, Sam, why not take this chance to leave Finley and marry Noah? You’d be my granddaughter–in–law.”
Samantha had expected this, but hearing it spoken aloud still made her skin crawl. Marry Noah? No way! I’d never be with someone as dark–hearted as him.

In my past life, Noah used me, left me behind, and even worked with have me killed. My body was left to be ravaged by animals and exposed to the elements.
recalling what Noah did made Samantha seethe with rage. She wanted to tear him apart make him suffer as she had.
The agony she experienced was beyond words. Even now, she could vividly remember the terror of being surrounded by snakes, insects, rats, and ants.
Samantha crushed the osmanthus cake in her hand, her anger evident.
Josiah noticed her silence and the way she was mashing the tartlet. He asked, “Sam, what’s up? Is the tartlet not good? Or what I said upset you?”
Samantha snapped back to reality and forced a smile. “No, the tartlet’s fine. Your words didn’t bother me.”
Josiah continued, “So, what’s going through your mind? Are you thinking about marrying Noah and becoming my daughter–in–law?”
Without missing a beat, Samantha responded, “No, I’m not interested.” To make her point clear, she added, “I really don’t want to!”
Listening nearby, Noah stepped in and asked, “Why not?”
Samantha mused, Why? It’s easy. I don’t want to go through that kind of death again.
She then sipped her juice and replied calmly, “It’s simple. I see you more like a brother than a husband. Plus, I’m in love with Finley. I’m not leaving him for you.”
Noah’s face darkened, exclaiming, “Sam, you’re not serious!”
