After a brief pause, Emily added, “It’s not like anyone’s inviting you to a party, right? You might as well join me for some fun. After all, you head home to Mr. Dean the moment school ends every day. That must be quite dull, don’t you think?” 

Her words were laced with a subtle but unmistakable air of superiority. 

While Emily’s words seemed to come from a place of concern, Samantha could easily discern the underlying message. The first statement was a clear display of Emily’s social status, highlighting the fact that she had connections and Samantha did not. It was Emily’s way of showcasing the strength of her social circle. 

The second sentence, though framed as an invitation, was essentially a way of making Samantha her sidekick. Being invited as an afterthought didn’t offer much more respect than being treated as a lackey. 

The final comment about Samantha’s daily routine with Finley was a veiled criticism, implying that Samantha was a clingy nuisance who spent too much time with Finley. It seemed as though Emily was suggesting that Samantha should give Finley some space. 

Why wasn’t Emily more concerned with her brother, Elias, instead of obsessively focusing on Samantha and Finley? Was she worried that her feelings for Elias would be noticed?
