This was Hazel’s main objective for the day. She had intentionally built rapport with Emily to dig into the details of the bidding project at Finley’s company. Her goal was to find out the starting price for the bid.
Given that Emily had mentioned her brother was very close to Finley, Hazel figured that Elias would likely be involved in the bidding conference. Even if Elias wasn’t participating as a bidder, he would probably attend as Finley’s personal doctor to tend to him if he fell ill. Plus, as a friend of Finley, Elias would probably discuss the bidding with him.
So, it made perfect sense to get information through Emily. When Hazel asked her, Emily thought for a moment before replying, “I don’t know much about my brother’s dealings with Fin’s company. They usually discuss things in the study and never in front of me.”
Hazel smiled and said, “Emily, if you don’t know, you could always ask your brother. Didn’t you say he dotes on you the most?”
Emily countered, “I’m not interested in Fin’s company affairs, so why would I ask
about them?”

That was a fair point.
However, if Emily didn’t ask, Hazel couldn’t get the information she wanted from her. Hazel pressed on, “Actually, my family is quite interested in Finley’s company’s bidding project. Given how close your brother is to Finley, could you ask him what the starting price is for the bidding?”
Asking about the starting price?
Emily frowned. “Isn’t this the kind of thing you just don’t ask about? If the starting pri the bidding gets leaked, it’s illegal and could land someone in jail.”

Hazel started to work on her, trying to change her mind. “Emily, other people might face jail time, but your brother, Elias, won’t. Think about it–Elias and Finley are so close. Even if he leaked the starting price, I don’t think Finley would have him thrown in jail”
“Just because you say that doesn’t mean it’s true. You’re not Fin, so how can you be sure Elias won’t get in trouble for leaking the starting price? Everyone says Fin can be unpredictable. One moment, he’s all smiles, and the next, who knows what he might do?”
Emily continued, “Besides, if Elias were to betray Fin, it would be even worse because of their close relationship. Imagine how hurt Fin would feel if he sold him out.”
Though Emily might seem naive, she wasn’t foolish. Hazel realized she wouldn’t be able to manipulate her. “Emily, this bidding conference is really important for my family’s company.
