In the past, John could use Finley’s card as much as he wanted without limits. Now, Finley felt it was time to cut back. He didn’t want to keep supporting the two freeloaders who had hurt Samantha. 

Upon hearing this, John immediately grew displeased. 

“Finley, how can you treat your grandpa like this? You can take away other things, but my allowance is non- negotiable. I’ll make you a deal–I promise not to help Jacob’s family anymore. Is it okay?” 

He has made this promise many times before. Yet, what’s the result? Does he not know what he’s doing? 

Finley decided to stop entertaining John. He quietly continued serving Samantha food while Samantha remained silent about the whole allowance issue. 

If she sided with Finley, she’d offend John; if she sided with John, she’d offend Finley. 

After thinking it through, she realized the safest course was not to pick sides at all. 

After dinner, Finley and Samantha returned home together. 

On the way back, Finley asked, “Why didn’t you say anything during dinner?” 

Samantha smiled. “I didn’t know what to say.” 

“I think you’re just not used to having dinner with Grandpa. You seemed pretty tense.” 

Tense? Not at all. I’m simply not sure what to say.

Finley took off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders. “Are you cold?” 

“Not at all.” 

“It’s dark now. Are you scared?” 

Samantha shook her head. “I’m not scared because I have you by my side. That makes me feel safe.” 

Upon hearing her words, Finley’s face softened with a smile. “Why are you so good with words? Who taught you that?” 

Samantha thought about it seriously, then leaned her head on his shoulder. “I taught myself.” 

“You’re truly clever.” 

“Compared to you, it’s nothing.” 

Finley chuckled, his face full of affection as they arrived home. 

As soon as they stepped inside, Elias appeared next to Finley. 

“Finley, I’ve already apologized. Why are you still making Ms. Stuart refuse to prepare food for me? I know
