All the maids held their breath, not daring to make a sound. It seemed like they had learned

They finally knew why; although Zach showered Madelyn with affection, she never reciprocated 

Margaret was holding Dalton as she walked toward the door. Before she went inside, she heard the sound of something breaking and felt Dalton trembling in her arms. She was worried that he
