Luca’s words weren’t only healing, but apparently they were enough to wake the dead, or the kinda dead.
Because from the cocoon of Kyle’s coat came a soft rustling.
Then a faint voice, small and hoarse like a kitten with a sore throat: "Food? There’s food?"
But his sudden interjection attracted the attention of everyone, especially the gaze of one dutiful human recliner.
"You heard there’s food and you’re awake?" Kyle looked down, seeing the face of someone who didn’t expect to be put in the spotlight.
Ollie’s face, which had been a model of serenity while sleeping, was once again mutating into a tomato who could only say, "N-no! It’s not like that!"
But just as the blonde tried defending himself, his stomach growled. Loud. Obnoxious. Embarrassingly honest.
"AAAAAHHHH!" Ollie complained, embarrassed at the sound.
But the timing was undeniable.
There was a beat of silence before Kyle chuckled, low and fond. "Well, I guess...good morning to you, too."
That broke the tension.
Laughter spilled around the room—light, warm, and very much needed.
Luca was the first to snicker at Ollie’s outburst, hands politely clasped like he hadn’t just watched someone be publicly betrayed by their own digestive system.
But after a few giggles, the little lord straightened up, lips curling into something more thoughtful.
"Well, we should actually eat," Luca said, glancing around. "Everyone’s been really busy lately. But it’s a bit too early for dinner, so the kitchen probably hasn’t finished prepping the dishes they’ve mastered."
The crowd murmured in agreement. Nobody wanted to poke the cooks when they were in their "concentration ritual," which often involved humming battle hymns and threatening each other over who was going to taste test for the day.
Luca nodded to himself. "In that case...I’ll make a snack, let’s try some kale chips."
A beat.
Then—
"Kale?" Jax repeated, perking up like someone just mentioned his long-lost cousins.
"Yes?" Luca blinked. "It’s a vegetable."
"That’s the one being cared for by the elders, right? But it’s always there! I thought it was some kind of decoration!"
Xavier, slightly behind them, muttered, "You were there when it was planted."
"Yes! But I didn’t get to eat it then!"
With a quiet laugh, Luca effortlessly relocated everyone to the test kitchen. The inside was warm and brightly lit, filled with soft hums of machines. The air smelled faintly of herbs and sterilized surfaces.
Jax was already bouncing on his heels. "Chips, as in like banana chips?"
Luca initially checked the ovens, preheating a few of them before walking them through it, explaining, "When we were trying to decide what to plant, kale came to mind because it’s a cut-and-grow-again kind of crop. That means we can keep harvesting from the same plant multiple times. It’s incredibly efficient."
"What?!"
"Yes, unlike those that you have to replant right away for the next harvest, crops that are like this allow for more harvest because we skip the germination and maturing period for the second and so on harvests.’
Then Ollie, finally upright and awake, blinked at his brother. "So, you’re saying it grows really fast?"
"Not exactly," Luca nodded.
"Unlike water spinach or lettuce, kale takes a little longer before the first harvest, but after that? We can harvest again and again. Normally, it takes about two weeks per cycle, but in here..." He gestured toward the entire place. "We’re talking days or with the Elders, even less."
Jax, now crouched beside a kale crate as if inspecting sacred treasure, whispered reverently, "If it’s like this, then my children could live longer, right?"
There was silence.
Luca blinked. "...I guess you could think of it like that."
"Then I must adopt some," Jax declared dramatically.
"I think the elders would be able to help you," Luca said happily, because if it’s like this, Jax wouldn’t cry whenever he had to harvest his crops!
His boyfriend.
OOF!
Gaah! Erase! Erase! Internally chastised the blonde who was trying to remain a good boy with pure thoughts.
