Chapter 250
Chapter 250
Gabriel only stayed a short while to speak with Sophie before leaving to deal with other matters. Soon, the room fell quiet, with only Matthew and Anthony still seated beside Sophie’s bed.
The brothers were originally planning to comfort her for a bit longer and then leave once she’d calmed down. But just as they were about to get up, Sophie reached out and tugged lightly on Matthew’s sleeve.
Peeking out from beneath her blanket, she blinked up at him with trembling eyes and whispered softly, “Matthew… I want to talk to you. Can you stay with me just a little longer?”
Of course Matthew couldn’t refuse.
Anthony glanced at the two of them and said, “Then I’ll leave you to it. I’m heading back to rest.”
Without another word, he turned and walked out, leaving Sophie and Matthew alone.
As soon as the door closed, Matthew leaned closer and asked gently, “What is it, Sophie? What did you want to say to me?”
“Matthew… I’m sorry.” Her voice trembled as she wiped at her tears. “Back then… I was horrible. I was out of my mind when I poisoned you. I don’t even know what I was thinking. But the moment I did it, I regretted it. I wanted to give you the antidote, I really did… but Father posted guards by your side day and night, and I was too scared. I waited too long. And just when I finally got up the courage to sneak in and give it to you… Eliza and Nolan showed up, and everything spiraled from
there”
She sobbed quietly, looking utterly pitiful.
“I’m sorry, Matthew. I swear I’ll never do something like that again.”
Tears clung to her lashes, her gaze filled with fragile hope as she stared up at him. Matthew was stunned. He hadn’t expected this to be what she wanted to say.
His expression grew complicated for a moment, but he quickly softened. “It’s alright, Sophie. It’s all in the past now. I know who you are—if it weren’t for you, I might’ve died long ago. Even after I woke up from the poisoning and knew it was you… I still chose to believe in you. Because you’re not just my sister. You’re also the one who once saved my life.”
She clutched his sleeve even tighter and lowered her gaze, pretending to be consumed by guilt. “I can’t believe you still remember that. But really, it was nothing. A tiny act of kindness at best. Compared to what I did to you later… it’s unforgivable.”
She looked heartbroken, her remorse seemingly genuine.
“During those awful days in the palace, all I could think about was you,” she continued, voice trembling. “I remembered how good you were to me… and I regretted everything even more. I don’t expect you to forgive me. I just… I just don’t want you to leave me
Matthew’s heart twisted at her words. “Leave you? Never,” he said firmly. “You’re pure–hearted, Sophie. You were never a match for Eliza. She’s the one who set us up, who poisoned me, who exposed your birthday at the banquet and destroyed your name. You only lost control because of what she did.”
His voice, usually dark and brooding, was surprisingly gentle now.
“You don’t need to worry,” he said with conviction. “I’m alive, aren’t I? Nothing’s wrong with me now. So don’t blame yourself. No matter what happens, I’ll always be by your side. I won’t abandon you.”
Sophie stared at him, eyes wide and dewy, like a frightened kitten afraid of being cast aside. She clung to him and whispered, “You really mean it? You won’t leave me?”
“I’m scared,” she confessed, her voice soft and broken. “Father… he seems so disappointed in me now. Dylan doesn’t want me

anymore. Benedict… he doesn’t like me the way he used to. And Anthony, he’s too frail… I don’t want to be a burden. If you left me too, I’d have no one
Her list of names–each one an ally slipping away–made her seem so fragile, so alone. Matthew felt a painful ache in his
chest.
“Don’t be afraid,” he said, solemn and sure. “I swear, if I ever abandon you, may I be struck down by lightning, killed on the spot”
Sophie gasped. “Don’t say that! You’re the best brother I have. I’d rather you leave me than get struck by lightning!”
Matthew was deeply moved. He never imagined Sophie cared so much.
But of course she did. She was kind–too kind. She only lashed out that one time because Eliza had pushed her too far. It wax Eliza’s fault. Not Sophie’s.
Matthew’s eyes darkened at the thought.
He said gently, “Alright, no more tears. You’ll always be my sister. The only one I acknowledge. Just focus on resting and getting better. When you’ve recovered, I’ll take you out for some fresh air. We’ll have fun again, just like before.
As far as he was concerned, Eliza had already gone too far. She’d made Sophie suffer–humiliated her, hurt her. That was something Matthew would never forgive.
Once Sophie finally drifted off to sleep, Matthew got up and left.
But the moment the door shut behind him, Sophie’s eyes snapped open. Gone was the fragile, tearful girl from moments ago. In her place was a calculating, disgusted expression.
“Useless,” she muttered coldly. “If I’m your ‘real sister, then why haven’t you taken revenge for me?”
