Turning back to Gabriel, Anthony forced a smile, his face tight with tension. “Father, I apologize. The scent of blood startled me, and I fear I spoke out of line.”

Gabriel sneered, his voice icy. “It wasn’t wrong–it was the truth, wasn’t it?”

Of his four sons, Gabriel knew Anthony was the most distant. He showed little affection for his siblings or even for Gabriel. Only Sophie, whom Gabriel had brought home, received Anthony’s unusual attention.

Anthony’s frailty made him insignificant to Gabriel, who had already chosen his heir and only required obedience from his remaining sons.

Gabriel bypassed Anthony, entering the room and taking a seat. He dispatched a shadow guard to attend to Roger’s remains. The room, however, still bore the gruesome stains of the deed, carrying an eerie atmosphere.

Sophie’s skin crawled as she stood in her room, the gruesome sight making her feel sick. “Father,” she whispered, trembling. “Could I please move to a different room later?” The thought of sleeping there in that room filled her with dread. Gabriel glared coldly at her and scoffed, “No. You don’t get to choose.” He would have indulged her whims without a second thought if she had been her usual obedient self, but his anger was palpable now.

He believed that if he didn’t discipline her now, she would only create more problems for him later. “Leave the bloodstains,” he said. “You can clean them when you’ve learned your lesson.”

Sophie shivered, instinctively wanting to protest, but Gabriel’s chilling gaze silenced her. Fear kept her mouth shut. Anthony said, “Father, Sophie is still young. Seeing all this blood might give her nightmares. Perhaps we could…” Gabriel’s voice was icy. “Since when do you have the right to question my decisions?”

Anthony and Sophie went silent, their faces stiff. Gabriel shot Anthony a look before turning to Sophie. “Still want to switch rooms?”

Sophie shook her head quickly, afraid to speak. When they were both quiet, Gabriel spoke again, his voice full of contempt. “One of your plots is foolish, and the other is incompetent. Neither of you can avoid trouble. You constantly use that idiot Matthew for your schemes and fail miserably every time. How utterly disgraceful.”

Anthony and Sophie hung their heads, humiliated, their faces pale with shame.

Gabriel scoffed. “You refuse to lear

lesson and continue to cause trouble, so I’ll give you one last chance. Fail me again, and you’ll be married off. Stir up even an ounce of trouble after that, and you’ll be thrown out of the Duke’s estate, just like Dylan.”

Gabriel tapped the table twice, and a shado

guard immediately brought him a stack of papers. “These are the projects Eliza has managed since returning to Hasen City from Noganlul,” Gabriel said. “Please review them.”
