“Any thoughts on who might’ve sent the assassins to the Light Show? Nolan asked casually as they headed back to Saint Grace Nunnery.
Eliza thought for a moment before replying. “Not many people want me dead, just a few usual suspects. It’s either someone from the Duke’s estate or those mysterious figures backing Sophie. I’m leaning toward the latter.
She recalled what Tina had mentioned earlier about the enigmatic expert guarding Sophie’s courtyard. If assassins were involved, it was almost certain they were connected to that mysterious figure.
But Nolan interrupted her train of thought. It wasn’t just one group.”
“Hm?” Eliza turned to look at him, confusion flickering in her eyes.
“Among the assassins tonight, two of them moved differently from the others, Nolan explained, his tone calm and steady.
Eliza’s eyes widened in surprise. You mean, others were targeting me?”
“Not necessarily you. Nolan replied, his voice even.
Then_?” Eliza hesitated, a sudden thought flashing through her mind. Her brows furrowed as she asked, “Were they after you?”
Her face tightened with worry, her voice softening as she asked, “Do you have any suspects!” Eliza threw his earlier question back at him.
Nolan chuckled lightly. “Not yet. Honestly, there’s no shortage of people who’d love to see me gone.
Eliza watched his calm expression and felt her nerves ease. She thought, If Nolan isn’t worried, why should I be! After all, Prince Nolan has faced countless enemies over the years. What are two assassins compared to the battles he has endured?”
Anyone bold enough to attempt an assassination while Nolan was traveling with Serenity deserves to be skinned alive.
Before long, the men Nolan had sent out to investigate returned.
“Prince Nolan, we’ve got news,” said Ross, riding up swiftly.
“Speak.”
Ross’s tone was serious as he reported. “The group targeting Holy Lady was cornered by our men during their escape. When they realized there was no way out, one of them suddenly dropped dead in agony. Afterward, a finger–thick creature crawled out of the corpse, looking like a mix between a worm and a snake. It was bizarre,
Eliza’s
i’s eyes narrowed at the mention of the worm–snake creature. She was certain.
It had to be the group hiding behind Sophie.
She turned to Ross. “Is the body still intact?”
Ross nodded. “Rest assured, Holy Lady. The body is intact, but it’s strange. To be safe, we had to call a doctor, so there might be a slight delay”
Eliza glanced at the sky outside.
Judging by the time, she figured she’d be back at Saint Grace Nunnery soon, just in time to prepare for the blessing ceremony with Mary and the others
After a moment’s thought, she said, “Alright, have it sent to the back of Mount Westin Tina will coordinate with you there”
She needed to understand their methods to stay ahead. Only by knowing both oneself and the enemy can one win every battle.
As soon as Eliza returned to Salut Grace Nunnery, she had barely stepped into her courtyard when Sarah came to call her.
Before dawn, the entire nunnery was bustling with activity, with senior and junior sisters alike preparing for the day.
After all, aside from the group that had targeted Eliza, Ross and his team had uncovered some leads to another group.
We managed to capture one alive. The guy tried to off himself, but luckily, he didn’t have any creepy bugs or snakes on him this time. We were quick to pop his jaw out of place, but his face is a mess, completely unrecognizable. And his bones are tough as hell. Our men couldn’t get a single word out of him, even after they took turns to interrogate him.”
“Then I’ll see for myself just how tough his bones are, Nolan said coldly.
Nolan stepped into the dungeon, his gaze falling on the barely–breathing assassin who had been subjected to brutal torture. Expressionless, he raised a hand and commanded. “Give him a revival pill. Make sure he doesn’t die too quickly.”
Then, he selected a sharp spike from the array of torture tools nearby and slowly approached the assassin, towering over him with an icy glare.
are as tough as your mouth
Moments later, the assassin’s screams tore through the dungeon, sharp and gut–wrenching, making even the stone walls seem to shudder.
