Chapter 686
Someone knocked on the door and said, “Mr. Malone, your meal is ready.
Outside the door, two young attendants ascended the steps.
One carried a tray with food, while the other opened the door and gave “Rafe” à careful once–over. After his companion set down the tray, they Gowed and quietly withdrew, closing the door behind them.
But they didn’t immediately leave.
Instead, they lingered outside, waiting until they heard the “person” inside get up and start eating, only then finally exiting the small courtyard.
Soon after, the young attendant who observed “Rafe” appeared in Gabriel’s study.
The attendant reported, “Lord Mowbay. Mr. Malone has been well–behaved these past few days. He’s stayed in his room just as you instructed, eating, sleeping, and nothing else.”
Gabriel asked, “Has he asked for anything, or tried to go out?”
The attendant shook his head. “No.”
“So obedient?” Gabriel narrowed his eyes, suspicion in his voice.
It was obvious that he didn’t believe Rafe was truly that docile.
The attendant ventured, “Mr. Malone has been confined for half a month. Lord Mowbay, should we let him out?”
Gabriel shook his head. “No. Keep him locked up, and keep watching him.”
‘Maybe he’s just pretending to be docile, waiting for me to let my guard down,’ Gabriel thought. ‘There’s no way that wet–behind–the–ears kid can keep cool forever.‘
Little did he know that the “kid” he spoke of had already snuck out on the first night of being held and had gotten up to many mischiefs since then.
Just like now, he was causing a ruckus at the gates of the Marquis’s estate.
Rafe shouted, “The Holy Lady has already sent in her visiting card, yet you’re keeping us outside. What do you mean? Are you trying to provoke her?”
Wearing a mask and completely unafraid of being recognized, Rafe was acting as arrogantly as possible.
When he heard that the people from the Marquis’s estate wouldn’t let Eliza in, he immediately yanked one of the guards forward and began berating him.
The guard trembled and stammered, “Lord Dale said he hasn’t received the Holy Lady’s visiting card, so please come another day.”
Eliza’s cold, commanding voice rang out from inside the carriage. “I don’t have time to waste on you. Either Lord Dale comes out to greet me now, or I’ll have my people break down these gates of the Marquis’s estate.”
“Did you hear that? Hurry up and go inform Lord Dale!” Rafe barked, basking in Eliza’s authority,
“Eliza, must you be so aggressive?” Sophie’s voice rang out.
At that moment, a figure slowly emerged from the Marquis’s estate.
Fanning herself with an ornate fan, Sophie fixed her sharp gaze on the carriage outside, as if she could see straight through to the person inside.
Then, she continued, “The world praises your merciful heart. They say you’re gentle and kind, but I say they’re blind. Just look at you today. Do you think
our Marquis’s estate is so empty that you’d dare bring your insolent servant here to bully a mere gatekeeper at our door?”
