“Come on, a growing Alpha like you needs all his veggies, get them caten.” I glance up at Sally as she pushed my plate back towards me, she’s such a kind lady, not like my mother. She always makes me my meals, makes sure my clothes are clean and that my bed has clean. sheets. She even helps make me feel better when my father hurts me, sometimes it doesn’t work but I like it when she tries. I smile at her kind face as I start forking the leeks and cabbage into my mouth.
“Where is he?” I drop my fork and try to jump down from the chair at the breakfast bar.
“Don’t, run and it will be worse.” Sally’s voice is low so father won’t hear her, I know she’s right, running never works and it always leads to further punishment.
“There you are, eating as usual, you realise how much you cost me a month?” My father comes into the kitchen waving his hands about, his. dark hair is greasy and in need of a good clean. His beer belly is stretching his shirt out so much it looks like it might actually burst open, his green eyes, so unlike mine are blazing with fury.
“I’m sorry Alpha.” I cast my eyes down to the floor, I’m not allowed to call him father or allowed to look at him. I think he would rather I not be here at all but my mother insists that I stay, I don’t know why she
cares.
“Come with me, now.” I don’t look at Sally as I jump down from the breakfast bar and leave my plate of half eaten food. I keep my eyes on

the floor as I follow my fathers heavy footsteps, he leads me to the office. his office, it’s where he always punishes me. Going in here I know I’m about to endure some kind of pain, I don’t know what I did to make him angry this time or even if it was me but I know I’m about to be punished as he closes the heavy wooden door.
“I was at a meeting today, you know what the meeting was about?” I shake my head no as I kneel on the floor in front of his desk, I’m not allowed to sit in the comfortable chairs. My father moves over to his desk and pulls open the bottom drawer. I know it’s the bottom one without even looking up, it’s where he keeps his whip and belt.
“No. Alpha.” Everything inside of me wants to scream and shout but I keep my voice low and appeaseable. It won’t stop the punishment but it might make it not last as long.
“They want me to make plans for when you take over, they actually think that you are going to be Alpha of this Pack. Will you be, Alpha boy?” I shake my head no, “take your shirt off, I’m not buying another one.” I start to pull my t-shirt over my head, it’s not that the Pack doesn’ t have money it’s just that he doesn’t want to spend it.
I try to brace myself as I hear the whip sail through the air, no matter how tight I hold myself I always fall forward when the whip lands. It slices through my skin, I can feel the blood running down my back as he does this five more times. I’m gasping in pain by the time he grabs me by the scruff of my neck and drags me over to the cupboard. I have no fight left in me to protest as he shoves me inside.
“You will never be Alpha, I’ll kill you myself before you take over from me.” I cringe as he spits at me and slams the door closed. It’s only once. I am alone in the dark that I let my tears fall, alone and afraid I cry until there is nothing left. One day I’ll get out of here, one day I’ll be strong and I’ll be able to fight back, I just wish that day would come

soon.
“Cas?” A soft knock comes from the other side of the door, I know the voice but I can’t place it, it sounds like some kind of Angel. I’m not sure how long I’ve been inside the punishment cupboard, maybe I’ve fallen asleep and I’m dreaming. Maybe he actually did it this time and killed me, maybe I am speaking to an Angel.
“Hello?” My voice sounds small and so far away.
“I’m here Cas but I can’t open the door. Did he do this often?” I nod at the voice before I remember she can’t see me.
“Yes, this is my punishment.” I hear scratching on the door as if the Angel is trying to claw her way inside.
“How old are you?” What a strange question to ask, surely an Angel knows how old I am.
“I’m nine, don’t you already know Angel?” I hear chuckling and then more scraping. I’d move closer to the door but I can’t even turn around in here it’s so small.
“Still with that silly nickname, I’m no Angel, Cas. Hang on, think I’ve got it.” A loud bang fills the cupboard as the door flies open, the light behind the Angel is so blinding I have to hold up my hand to block my eves. After a minute or so I see the dark Angel is holding a hand
haired out to me, offering me help, slowly I reach out towards her. I push as she pulls and I fall from the cupboard landing on top of her.
“I know your face.” I tell her as I push up off of her body, my arms that were tiny only a second ago are now long and muscled. I can feel the strength of my body as I lift myself up and hold a hand out to her, by the time she’s standing I am towering over her.
“Now that’s the Cas I know.” Eva beams up at me with her shining blue
eyes. looking around the room I notice we are in my father’s office but it looks dusty and musty from not being used.
“I don’t understand. I was just in here.” Eva takes my big hand in her tiny one. looking down I notice how pale her skin is compared to my slightly tanned arm.
“You were dreaming. I could feel your pain so I guess I pulled myself in. Don’t ask me how, I keep getting told it’s a story for another time. Come on, I want to show you something.” I follow Eva as she pulls me from the old office. I’m not sorry to be leaving. I hate this room and always have. I don’t understand how Eva has made it into my nightmare but I’m glad she’s here. she seems to have chased the nightmare of my father away. Normally he stays with me until I am on the floor in a puddle of blood, it always ends the same way, with me trapped and unable to breath in that tiny cupboard.
Eva takes me through the kitchen and out into the garden, the sun is beating down on the grass, in the distance I can see a bundle of slate. grey and white fur.
“Ghost is talking with Storm, he’s quite upset. Maybe let them be for a little bit?” I nod my head as I stare at the two wolves, laying on the floor they are wrapped around each other, it almost reminds me of a yin and yang pattern.
“Why are we out here?” I ask Eva in confusion, I have no idea what’s happening or why it’s happening.
“I need to plant these, I tried to plant some before but they died. I think if you help me they might take to the soil.” She points down to a flower bed that isn’t actually in our Pack house garden, the soil has been. overturned and the plants lay on the grass beside it.
“I’m not a gardener.” I kneel down on the grass and pick up one of the

lavender plants, it smells amazing and reminds me of Eva. “You smell like these, I always think of lavender when I smell you.” Eva chuckles. as she kneels next to me, picking up a small shovel she starts to dig at the earth.
“What did you do this time? I know he did it often but what was the punishment for in this nightmare?” Eva holds out her small hand for the plant and I pass it to her, I think back to the nightmare and what happened.
“He had a meeting, it’s one all Alpha’s have when they have a male heir. It’s one that sets out the guidelines for when the son will take over, he never wanted me to take over.” I turn to look over at Storm and Ghost, she seems to be licking the side of his face, almost like she’s grooming him, it’s a personal thing to allow another wolf to
groom you.
“Will you be like that, if we have a son?” I look back at Eva as she casually asks the question.
“No, I’ll guide him, teach him how to do better and learn from my mistakes. When it’s time I’ll send him off to another Pack to learn from another Alpha, the way it should be.” I shock myself with my answer, no one has ever asked me how I would be with my own son but I know deep down inside of me that I will never be like my own father.
“Of course for us to make a son you will have to leave that cell.” Her words startle me and I stand up so quickly that I am pushed from the garden.
Opening my eyes I see Eva asleep on a small cot just outside of the cell bars, she looks peaceful in sleep and now I know why. She’s in a sunny garden, planting flowers and planning our future, standing from the floor I stretch before pulling the key from my pocket and opening the cell door.
