Chapter 156 

“Noelle.” 

Noelle paused mid–stride when she heard a crisp voice calling out from behind her. But then, she quickly pretended she hadn’t heard anything and continued on her way. 

Seeing this, Sandra rushed up and grabbed Noelle’s hand just as she was about to get into the elevator. “Noelle, why are you ignoring me? Is this where you live now? Why do you put yourself through all this suffering? If you need-” 

“Let go,” Noelle ordered, her face devoid of any emotion. 

Standing there, Sandra locked eyes with Noelle for a second before breaking out into a smile. “Noelle, don’t be like this. Do you know what the situation at home is right now? Mom has fallen ill, and things in the company aren’t that great, either. It’s all because-” 

“Weren’t you the one who set all of this up?” asked Noelle, cutting in mid–sentence. 

“L” 

Sandra wanted to defend herself, but Noelle continued to say, “Do you remember the talk we had in the car that night? Well, I had secretly recorded everything you said.” 

“W–What?” uttered Sandra, stunned. 

“Even though the Swansons don’t care whether I live or die how do you think they’ll react when they find out the daughter they’ve nurtured so carefully for years turned out to be this evil?” 

Sandra’s face grew even paler. Her lips trembled, as if trying to form words, but after a long silence, she still couldn’t find her voice. 

Noelle, however, had no interest in her struggles. “Are you letting go or not?” she asked impatiently. 

Sandra snapped back to her senses and blurted out, “You’re lying, aren’t you, Noelle? Because if you really did have those recordings, you would have used them already. You’re just trying to trick me!” 

“I didn’t play it for the Swansons because I couldn’t be bothered to stoop to your level. But if you keep pestering me, don’t expect me to show mercy.” 

Those words drained all the color from Sandra’s face. Her grip on Noelle’s hand gradually loosened until she finally let go. 

Just as Noelle turned to leave, Sandra suddenly said, “But its true that Mom is sick, and it’s serious. The doctor said she might have less than six months to live. Are you really not going to see her?” 

“Six months?” Noelle turned to look at her. “What nonsense are you spouting?” 

Sandra smirked. “So, you really don’t know, huh? Figures. Mom’s always been so strong–willed, so she’d never let you know. But regardless, she’s still the woman who gave birth to you. Can you really live with yourself if you don’t visit her?” 

Noelle didn’t respond, but her hands hanging by her side slowly balled into fists. 

“She’s at the hospital right now,” Sandra added softly. “You should spare some time to visit her. I’m sure she’d be happy to see you.” 

With that, Sandra turned around and walked away. But she didn’t go far. After leaving the apartment building where Noelle lived, she returned to the taxi she’d been using and stared silently out the window.
