Three days after Sandra’s visit, Noelle finally went to the hospital. 

She had a mask over the lower half of her face. Through a quick conversation with one of the nurses, she was able 

the to confirm that Matilda was indeed hospitalized. However, when she pressed for details about the illness, nurse refused to provide any further information. 

Left with no choice, Noelle silently stepped into the elevator and rode it to the designated floor. As she approached the hospital room, she heard Matilda and Sandra talking. 

“I think Maxwell is a good match. After marrying him, I’m sure you- 

“But Mom, I don’t even like him!” whined Sandra, close to fears. “And he doesn’t like me, either. Did you know that he didn’t get his injuries from a car accident at all? It was because-” 

She abruptly stopped speaking. 

“Because of what?” pressed Matilda. 

“In any case, he doesn’t love me, and I don’t want to marry him, either!” 

Matilda fell silent. 

Sensing an opening, Sandra clutched Matilda’s hand tightly “Mom, I really like Hendrix. Please help me, okay? Maxwell doesn’t even have any status in his family. Marrying into his family won’t bring any benefit to ours at all! 

“But Hendrix…” 

“Hendrix loves me! I’ve known him since we were kids. How could I not know his real feelings? As long as you’re willing to help me 

“What exactly are you planning to do?” asked Matilda finally. 

Sandra took a deep breath, but before she could speak, a voice suddenly came from behind Noelle. 

“Why are you blocking the doorway?” asked a nurse. 

The voice made Sandra’s face drain of color as her eyes darted sharply toward the doorway. There, her gaze collided with Noelle’s. 

Matilda, too, clearly hadn’t expected Noelle to show up. She froze for a moment, her expression one of disbelief as she asked, “Why are you here?” 

Noelle wasn’t sure if it was just he.gination, but she thought she saw a flicker of joy in Matilda’s eyes. 

Before Noelle could respond, Matilda turned to Sandra. “Were you the one who told Noelle? Didn’t I tell you not to say anything? Even if she comes, there’s nothing she can do In fact, it’ll just upset her.” 

“Mom, I know you’ve been secretly crying over her photos these past few days, and the doctor said you need to stay positive. I didn’t know what else to do…” As Sandra spoke, her eyes gradually turned red. 

To be honest, watching their little performance made Noelle feel like throwing up. Still, she didn’t turn around and walk away. Instead, she walked straight toward the hospital bed with a bouquet of flowers in her hand. 

“Mom, it’s getting late, so I’ll head home and prepare dinner for you. I hope you and Noelle have a good chat,” said Sandra. She cast one last glance at Noelle before finally turning and leaving the room. 

Noelle stayed where she was, unmoving.

Matilda’s gaze lingered on her for a long moment before she finally broke the silence. “Have you been doing well? 

“Yup. Quite well,” replied Noelle. 

“Is that so?” There was a subtle twitch in the corner of Matilda’s lips. “That’s good. I know… those years you spent at home were difficult for you. So, I’m really happy that you’ve built a good life for yourself.” 

She even managed a small smile as she spoke. 

To be honest, it had been so long since Noelle had seen such a “maternal” expression on her face that, for a moment, she didn’t quite know how to react. 

Matilda quickly reached out and took her hand. “I’m sorry. These past few days, I’ve been lying here, feeling the unfairness of life. At the same time, I’ve been reflecting and regretting so much. I owe you more than I can make up for.”
