Chapter 696 

That deep and magnetic voice spoke up from behind her. “Be careful.” 

Eugene wrapped one arm around her shoulder and pulled her back gently. It was only then that Melanie realized that Howard had dragged her to a small flight of steps, and there was a gap in the step right in front of her. 

If she had taken another step forward, she would have definitely lost her footing and fallen. 

Melanie looked at the gap, her face cold and stormy. It was obvious that Howard had done this on 

purpose. 

After all, there were plenty of other places where they could have gone down the stairs, but he just had to bring her here. 

Everyone else passing by consciously avoided this gap. 

Howard suddenly saw the change in Melanie’s gaze. Although his expression did not change, there was a hint of guilt in his eyes.

He barked at Melanie angrily, “Don’t make me repeat myself. I’m telling you, if you insist on giving birth to this bastard, don’t expect me to acknowledge it as my grandchild!” 

Melanie looked at him with nothing but contempt. Howard’s self–righteousness astounded her. 

He had ignored her for more than ten years, and now he was threatening to disown her child? 

Melanie’s voice was trembling slightly. She was truly furious at Howard’s shamelessness. 

She clenched her fists and asked Howard sarcastically, “Why do I need you to acknowledge my child? You don’t even qualify as a father, much less a grandfather.” 

Melanie stared straight at Howard without backing down at all. “Do you really think you’re worthy of being in our lives?” 

She was blatantly challenging Howard’s authority as her father. Furious, he raised his hand to hit her. 

Melanie’s eyes narrowed, but an arm got in between her and her father. There was a sapphire cufflink on the sleeve. The fingers were long and slender, and the joints were well–defined. Faint veins could be seen under the thin skin.
