Chapter 103 Possibilities

**Mia’s POV**

The hostess guided me through La Maison’s elegant dining room weaving between tables filled with the city’s welldressed lunch crowd. My lower back ached slightly as I followed her. Side effect of carrying twins.

Just over there, she said, gesturing toward a corner booth where immediately spotted Scarlett’s unmistakable red hair.

Scarlett was laughing at something Morton had said, her head thrown back in that carefree way I’d always envied. They hadn’t noticed me yet, giving me a moment to observe them unguarded.

Something about Scarlett looked different. She was still stunning, of course impeccably styled in what was probably this season’s latest designer outfit. But there was something else, something new. A softness around her edges, perhaps? A contentment I’d never associated with my perpetually restless best friend.

Oh, I guessed I found the word. Scarlett was happily married.

Morton leaned in, saying something that made her smile again. He looked every bit the wealthy heir in his perfectly tailored Gucci suit, dark hair styled in that effortlessly expensive way. But what caught me was the way he looked at her, like she was the most fascinating creature he’d ever encountered.

Who would have thought? Scarlett Wallace, who’d sworn off serious relationships throughout college, now married to James Morton III and seemingly happy about it.

Scarlett glanced up then, her face lighting up when she spotted me. Mia!She waved enthusiastically, as if I might miss her in the crowded restaurant.

I navigated the final few steps to their table, my hand instinctively resting on my growing bump. Sorry I’m late. These two decided my bladder was a trampoline just as I was leaving.

God, pregnancy sounds horrific,Scarlett grimaced, standing to hug me. Her perfume was subtle but expensive, wrapping around me like a cloud. Sit, sit! You look ready to pop!

Thanks for that lovely image,I laughed, settling into the plush booth. And I’ve still got months to go.

Morton stood, ever the gentleman. Mia. Wonderful to see you.His handshake was firm but not aggressive. Must be the careful balance of someone raised with old money. Can I get you something to drink? Sparkling water? Juice?

Sparkling water would be great,I said, adjusting a cushion behind my back. With lime, if they have it.

He nodded, signaling a waiter with that subtle gesture wealthy people seem born knowing.

So,Scarlett leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with mischief. Are you seeing Thomas this week?

I choked on nothing. Excuse me?

Thomas, she clarified, as if I might have forgotten which brother she meant. He called yesterday and spent an extremely out -ofcharacter fifteen minutes asking about you.

Morton returned to his seat, looking amused. She’s been planning this ambush since his call.

There’s no ambush,Scarlett protested, slapping his arm fightly. I’m just making conversation.

About your brother and me?I raised an eyebrow. There’s nothing to discuss. He drove me to a doctor’s ap, That’s it.

That’s not what he said.Scarlett’s smile turned sly. He mentioned something about dinner plans?

.anent. Once.

The waiter arrived with my sparkling water, giving me a moment to recover. Thomas? Serious, responsible Thomas who’d lectured us about curfews throughout high school?

He may have suggested dinner,I admitted, taking a careful sip. But in a completely friendly, lookingoutforhissister’s-

pregnantfriend way.

Uhhuh.Scarlett’s disbelief was palpable. And I’m sure his sudden interest in your pregnancy comfort is purely altruistic. It is,I insisted. Besides, I’m hardly dating material right now. gestured to my bump. In case you hadn’t noticed.Morton cleared his throat. Perhaps we should order? I’ve heard the sea bass is excellent.

Scarlett shot him a look that clearly said *don’t change the subject, but reached for her menu anyway. Pine. Food first, then Mia’s love life.

There is no love life,I muttered, opening my own menu. The twins shifted restlessly, as if expressing their own opinions on the matter.

After we ordered sea bass for Morton, steak frites for Scarlett, and a salad with grilled chicken for me Scarlett launched into a detailed account of their honeymoon.

Bora Bora was absolute paradise, she gushed, showing me photos on her phone. Look at this water! It’s not even filtered it actually looks like that.

The images showed pristine beaches and overwater bungalows, along with several of Scarlett in increasingly tiny bikinis. She looked radiant, her happiness practically glowing through the screen.

It’s beautiful,I agreed, swiping through the gallery. Though I notice you actually left the resort occasionally. I’m impressed.Only because James insisted, she laughed. I would have been perfectly happy never leaving that infinity pool.

The local villages were fascinating,Morton added. The craftsmanship in their traditional arts is remarkable.

Scarlett rolled her eyes fondly. He bought half a gallery of indigenous artwork. Our apartment looks like a museum now.

It’s called having taste, darling,he replied with a smile that softened his words.

Watching them banter, I felt a strange twinge of something not quite envy, but a wistfulness for what might have been. If Kyle had been different, if I had been differentmaybe we could have had this easy affection.

Enough about us,Scarlett said, bringing me back to the present. How are you doing? Really? With everything

I knew she meant Taylor, the attack, the pregnancy all of it.

I’m okay,I said, surprised to realize it was mostly true. The babies are healthy. Mom’s recovery is going well. My designs for the children’s center were approved.I took another sip of water. And Taylor’s first court appearance is next week.

Scarlett’s expression hardened at the mention of Taylor. That bitch better get the maximum sentence. Attempted murder of a pregnant woman? She should be locked up for decades.

The video evidence is pretty damning,Morton added. Our family lawyer reviewed it. Said it’s about as clearcut as these cases get.

Still,Scarlett frowned, rich families have ways of manipulating the system. I’m calling every media contact I have. This isn’t getting swept under any rug.

I appreciate that,I said sincerely. But I’m trying not to think about it too much. Stress isn’t good for the babies.

Scarlett studied me for a moment. You seem different, my Mia.

Pregnancy wisdom,I joked. Comes with the stretch marks.

Our food arrived, momentarily pausing the conversation. I cut into my chicken, realizing how hungry I was. Feeding three people required more calories than I was used to.

So,Scarlett said after a few bites, clearly unable to contain herself any longer. About Thomas.

Chapter 103 Possibilities

I sighed. Scarlett
