The night air had cooled significantly. Scarlett walked slightly ahead, talking animatedly on her phone with Morton about something involving the auction house and potential legal action,

Thomas and I walk side by side. It’s a good thing that Thomas and had everything sorted out a few days ago. So I’m not as

nervous now.

“You’ve been quiet tonight,” Thomas observed, his voice pitched low enough that Scarlett couldn’t overhear. “Everything alright?”

“Just processing a lot,” I admitted. “As you can see, my life is always full of surprises. The job offer, this news about Kyle…” He stopped. “I’m sorry if that ruined your evening,” he said sincerely. “We debated whether to tell you.”

“No, I’m glad you did. Better to know than be surprised later.”

This has nothing to do with Scarlett or Thomas. The problem that needs to be solved only occurs between Kyle and me. But I should definitely talk to Scarlett and Morton about the need for some kind of confidentiality agreement between us.

We walked in silence for a moment before he spoke again. “For what it’s worth, I think you should take the job. Regardless of what Kyle does or doesn’t do. This is your career, your passion.”

Thomas was right. I shouldn’t have given up my own job opportunity for Kyle’s craziness. Kyle Branson can buy property anywhere on the planet. Even if I move to Mars to live, he can buy the place next to mine. Damn capitalism. I can’t just give up my life to avoid him.

“You’re right,” I said. “This isn’t about him. It’s about what I want for myself and my children.”

Thomas smiled, a genuine expression that softened his usually serious features. “Exactly.”

“Thomas, do you think it’s stupid that I’m bothered by all this?” I said, looking at him.

“There’s nothing stupid about it. Mia. We all have things that bother us.” He raised an eyebrow slightly.

I thought about Nate and Carol. Maybe the reason we think other people’s lives are perfect is because we don’t know the whole story.

We’d reached the hotel, the elegant façade illuminated against the night sky. Scarlett had already disappeared inside, she apparently still engrossed in her phone conversation.

“Thank you for tonight,” I said, turning to face Thomas. “For dinner, the conversation…everything.”

“My pleasure.” He hesitated, then added, “I meant what I said, Mia. You’re incredibly talented. Don’t let anyone—Kyle or anyone else–make you doubt that.”

The sincerity in his voice touched me unexpectedly. “I appreciate that.”

He nodded, taking a step back. “I should let you get some rest. Big day tomorrow,”

“Goodnight, Thomas.”

“Goodnight, Mia.”

I watched him walk away, his tall figure soon disappearing around a corner. With a sigh, I turned and entered the hotel, the warmth of the lobby enveloping me like a cocoon. The day’s emotional roller coaster had left me exhausted, and all I wanted now was to sink into that ridiculously comfortable hotel bed and sleep.

Scarlett was nowhere to be seen when I entered the suite, but a note on the coffee table explained her absence:

Morton called with auction house drama. Gone to his suite to help strategize. Don’t wait up! Love you!

I smiled despite my fatigue. “Strategize.” Right.

If I were to keep a gratitude journal, the three things I would be most grateful for today would be the new job offer, the dinner that exceeded expectations, and Thomas’s encouragement.
