Chapter 145 Trapped

Mia’s POV

Ms. Williams?A nurse hurried after me, waving a clipboard. You forgot to schedule your next appointment.

I sighed, turning back. This pregnancy brain was getting ridiculous. Last week, I’d put my keys in the refrigerator and spent twenty minutes searching the apartment while Gas watched me with what I swore was canine amusement.

Sorry about that,I said, accepting the clipboard. Guess I was distracted by the good news.

The nurse smiled sympathetically. Twins will do that to you. How about two weeks from today? Same time?

I checked my phone calendar. That works. Thank you.

Kyle said nothing, but saw it all.

We walked in awkward silence toward the bank of elevators, maintaining a careful distance. Kyle pressed the call button, and we waited, the tension between us almost palpable.

The elevator arrived with a soft chime, empty except for us. Kyle held the door as I entered, then followed, pressing the button for the ground floor.

How have you been feeling?he asked as the doors closed.

Fine.” I stared at the digital floor indicator, watching the numbers descend. Just the usual thirdtrimester things.

Kyle nodded, falling silent again. The elevator hummed softly around us, the air heavy with unspoken words.

Suddenly, the cabin jerked, the lights flickered, and we lurched to an abrupt stop. The sudden movement threw me off balance, and Kyle’s hand shot out to steady me before I could fall.

What was that?I asked, heart racing as I pulled away from his touch.

Kyle frowned, pressing the ground floor button again. Nothing happened. He tried several other buttons, including the alarm, but the panel remained dark and unresponsive.

It seems we’re stuck,he said calmly, reaching for the emergency phone embedded in the wall panel. He held it to his ear for a moment, then replaced it with a grim expression. Dead.

Great,I muttered, digging my cell phone from my purse. No signal,I announced after checking the screen. Of course.

Kyle checked his own phone, frowning at the lack of reception. We’re probably between floors.

The elevator jerked again, dropping slightly before stabilizing. I grabbed the handrail, my pulse spiking. What’s happening?

I don’t know,Kyle said, pressing the call button repeatedly. After a moment, the panel lit up again, and the elevator began a smooth descent. Relief washed through me as we continued moving downward.

Until I noticed we weren’t stopping at the ground floor.

Why are we still going down?I asked, watching the indicator show P1, then P2, then P3. The hospital anly had two basement parking levels as far as I knew.

The elevator came to a stop at a floor labeled B3, and the doors slid open to reveal darkness.

This isn’t right,Kyle said, holding his arm across the door to prevent it from closing. This looks like a construction level.

He was correct. The dim emergency lighting revealed bare concrete floors, unfinished walls, and construction equipment covered in protective tarps. The air smelled of dust and concrete.

Let’s try another floor,I suggested, reaching for the panel. But when Kyle stepped back and the doors closed, nothing happened. I pressed several buttons, growing increasingly frustrated when the elevator remained motionless.

It’s not responding,I said, unable to keep the worry from my voi

Kyle pressed the alarm button, but no sound emerged. He tried prding the doors open, but they were firmly sealed.

We should try the construction level,he decided after a moment There might be workers there, or at least a stairwell we can

Use,

I nodded, and he forced the doors open again, holding them as I stepped carefully into the darkened space. The emergency lights cast eerie shadows across the unfinished area. Construction quaterials were piled against walls, and plastic sheets hug from the ceiling in places, billowing slightly in the stale air.

Hello?Kyle called, his voice echoing in the empty space, Is anyone down here?

Silence answered him.

I shivered, wrapping my arms around myself despite the stuffy warmth. This is just perfect,I muttered.

Kyle pulled out his phone again, holding it up as he walked a few steps in different directions, searching for signal. Nothing,he reported, returning to where I stood.

What now?I asked, trying to keep the edge of panic from my voice,

We find the stairwell,Kyle replied, his tone reassuringly matter of fact. He shrugged off his suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders before I could protest. The construction crew must have access. Let’s follow the wall and see what we find,

The jacket smelled like him- that subtle blend of expensive cologne and something uniquely Kyle. I wanted to shrug it off on principle, but the basement was chilly despite the stuffiness, and the weight of it was oddly comforting

Fine,I agreed, falling into step beside him as we began walking along the perimeter of the large, open space.

Our footsteps echoed on the concrete floor, the sound bouncing off bare walls and making the space feel even more cavernous. I kept one hand on my belly, an automatic gesture of protection that had become habit over the past several months.

Someone will notice the elevator malfunction,Kyle said after we’d walked in silence for a minute. They’ll send maintenance to check,

How long will that take?I asked, stepping carefully around a pile of construction debris.

Kyle checked his watch. Depends on when they notice. Could be minutes, could be longer.

Lovely,I said dryly.

We continued our circuit of the floor, finding nothing but more unfinished space. No stairwell door appeared, and the elevator remained stubbornly unresponsive when we circled back to it.

This doesn’t make sense,Kyle muttered, examining the elevator panel again. There has to be a way out.

Maybe it’s behind one of these tarps,I suggested, gesturing to the covered equipment and supplies.

Kyle nodded, moving to investigate. I leaned against the wall, suddenly tired. My back ached, and my feet were throbbing in my sensible but still inadequate shoes. One of the twinsprobably Twin B, who was always more activedelivered a sharp kick to my ribs, making me wince.

You should sit down,Kyle said, noticing my discomfort. He returned to my side, concern evident in his eyes.

I’m fine,I insisted

Mia.Just my name, but packed with meaning. You’re twentyeight weeks pregnant with twins. Please sit.

I wanted to argue on principle, but he was right. I nodded, allowing him to guide me to what appeared to be a stack of bagged concrete mix. He quickly arranged several bags into a makeshift seat, then helped me lower myself onto it.

Thank you,I said grudgingly.

Kyle nodded, returning to his investigation of the space. I watched him move methodically around the perimeter, checking behind tarps and examining walls for any sign of a exit.

This is ridiculous,I said after several minutes of silence. How can there be no way out of this level?

There has to be,Kyle replied, his voice echoing slightly. Building code requires it.

Well, clearly someone didn’t follow code,I retorted.

Kyle continued his search, disappearing behind a large tarpcovered structure. I shifted uncomfortably on my makeshift seat, trying to ease the pressure on my back. The twins were restless, perhaps sensing my anxiety.

Find anything?I called when Kyle didn’t return immediately.

Not yet,his voice drifted back. But I’m still looking.

I sighed, glancing at my watch. We’d been trapped for nearly twenty minutes now. Surely someone would notice soon. The hospital must have procedures for elevator malfunctions, especially in areas with patients.

Kyle reappeared, dust smudging his onceimmaculate white shirt. Even disheveled, he managed to look unfairly handsome. It was annoying.

I found a door,he announced, but it’s locked from the other side. No keypad or card reader on this side.

Of course it is,I muttered.

Someone will find us,Kyle said with that infuriating certainty he always projected. My security team tracks my location. When they can’t reach me, they’ll start looking.
