The WaldorfAstoria’s grand ballroom had been transformed into something out of a fairy tale Crystal chandeliers cast golden light across thousands of white roses, their perfume mixing with the subile notes of jasmine and vanilla from carefully placed arrangements. Everything is sparkled. Everything from the diamonddusted centerpieces to the handpainted ceiling murals. The media hadn’t exaggerated when they’d called it the wedding of the century.

I stood in the bridal suite, watching stylists fuss over Scarlett’s already perfect hair. Even the getting ready room was extravagant. All cream silk walls and gilded mirrors.

A far cry from the quiet registry office where I’d signed my marriage contract with Kyle. There had been no flowers, no music, no family to witness, just Linda with her tablet, efficiently scheduling Kyle’s next meeting while we waited for the clerk. I’d never even worn a wedding dress. Just one of my better work suits, because Kyle had a board meeting that afternoon and couldn’t spare more than an hour for the entire process. I’d been so desperately in love with him that I’d convinced myself it didn’t matter.

Now I understood what I’d refused to see then. Any man who truly loves you, even if it starts as a business arrangement, knows what a wedding means.

Stop fidgeting!Scarlett called from her makeup chair. You’re making me nervous.

I’m not fidgeting. But I caught myself smoothing the carefully draped fabric of my bridesmaid dress for the tenth time. At four and a half months pregnant, any fitted dress would have given me away immediately. But Scarlett had insisted on endless fittings until we found the perfect design. The flowing chiffon in a deep midnight blue that somehow made me look elegant instead of obviously hiding something..

You’re totally fidgeting. She spun in her chair, earning a cry of protest from her hairstylist. And you’re thinking too hard. I can see it on your face.

Shouldn’t I be the one telling you to calm down?I raised an eyebrow at her boundless energy. You’re literally getting married in two hours.

Exactly! Which means I get to be as excited as I want. She bounced up, her massive white skirts rustling. The dress was a work of art handbeaded lace and silk that probably cost more than most people’s houses. Besides, it’s just a contract marriage. No pressure.

Tell that to the two hundred guests and dozen magazine photographers outside.

Please:She waved dismissively. That’s just for show. The real pressure was convincing Morton’s mother that blush pink wasn’t an appropriate accent color. Can you imagine? Pink! At my wedding!

I had to laugh at her horrified expression. I’m so happy to see Scarlett like this. To care more about color schemes than actually getting married.

Before I could respond, her eyes suddenly went suspiciously bright.

Scar?I moved closer, concerned. Are you crying?

No!She dabbed carefully at her eyes. Maybe. Shut up. You justyou look so beautiful. And happy. Even with everything

Hey.I caught her hands. No crying. You’ll ruin your makeup.

I justShe squeezed my fingers. I’m so glad you’re here. That we’re doing this together. Even if it’s not exactly planned when we were kids.

What, you mean this isn’t the backyard wedding we designed when we were twelve?I gestured at the opulent suite. I distinctly remember your plans involving more water balloons.

She laughed wetly. God, remember how we used to practice our wedding walks using my mom’s curtains as veils?

And how your brother caught us trying on her shoes and lectured as for an hour about respecting other people’s property?Speaking, of Tommy. He just messaged me that he’s almost there Scarlett shrugged.I haven’t seen him in person for years. The video calls don’t count.

Don’t worry. He won’t eat you. I’m pretty sure if Morton does anything bad to you, he will be the very first one to fix Morton.Scarlett giggled. I agree.A knock at the door interrupted her. That’s probably him now. Come in!

Thomas Wallace hadn’t changed much since our teenage years sll tall and imposing, with the same serious dark eyes that used to make us feel guilty for sneaking cookies before dinner. His broad shoulders emphasized by the perfect cut of his charcoal grey suit. I guess years in Hong Kong’s financial district had refined him. His smile was warmer than I remembered as he took in his sister’s appearance.

Look at you,he said softly. All grown up.

Tommy!Scarlett launched herself at him, nearly knocking over a flower arrangement in her enthusiasm. I miss you. I am so happy you could come.

He hugged her carefully, mindful of her dress. Couldn’t miss my baby sister’s big day.His eyes met mine over her shoulder. Mia. It’s been too long.

Hello, Thomas.I smiled, remembering all the times he’d caught us in various schemes. Still keeping Scarlett out of trouble?

Trying to.He released his sister to study me: You look well. Different somehow.

His presence seemed to ground the room somehow, calming even scarlett’s nervous energy. That was Thomas’s gift. He got the ability to make any space feel more stable just by being in it. I’d forgotten that about him, or maybe I’d been too young to really notice it before.

I tensed slightly, but his expression showed only friendly interest. Thank you. You lookless stern.

He laughed. A real laugh, not the controlled chuckle I remembered. Hong Kong will do that to you. Hard to maintain perfect propriety when you’re sharing sidewalk space with a million other people.

Okay, enough reunion time!Scarlett checked her reflection one last time. We have a wedding to get to. Tommy, go make sure Morton isn’t having a corporate crisis or something. Mia, help me with this train?

The grand doors to the ballroom loomed ahead. I could hear the string quartet warming up, playing something soft and classical.

Ready?I asked Scarlett, who was practically vibrating with excitement.

Born ready. She grinned. Though I still think we should have convinced Morton to let me make my entrance on a white

horse.

Pretty sure his mother would have actually fainted.

Exactly! Missed opportunity.

Then the doors opened, and my heart stopped. Because there, standing next to Morton at the altar, was Kyle. He looked thinner than I remembered, the perfect cut of his suit emphasizing angles that hadn’t been there before. Our eyes met across the sea of white roses and sterling silver, and for a moment I forgot how to breathe.

I forced myself to look away first, focusing instead on helping Scarlett arrange her train. The weight of Kyle’s gaze lingered, making my skin prickle with awareness. Did he notice anything different about me? Could he tell I was carrying his children? The loose chiffon of my dress suddenly felt too thin, too revealing.
