I listen to my mother’s phone conversation with her lawyer. I can tell she truly wants to send her ex–husband to prison. I sit on the sofa and try to find a comfortable position, as my belly is getting bigger and bigger. Gas lies at my feet.
“Yes, I understand the implications,” Mom’s voice came from the kitchen, her usual shrill tone when she was dealing with legal matters. “But I need the records from 1995 to 2000. All of them.”
Gas nudged my ankle with his nose, placed his favorite rope toy on my lap, and his eyes filled with hope. I smiled and picked up the worn–out piece of string. Our games had become more gentle since I became pregnant. Gas had made his compromises for
“Be careful, Mommy,” I murmured as we played a modified version of catch, throwing the toy very close. Gas ran over happily.
I picked up the stack of papers Mom had left on the coffee table: bank statements, property records. Mom had really done her work.
I flipped to “James Young Investigation,” the simple label on the stack. I opened it. Inside was a basic background report. James Young. The name jumped out at me from the clinical text. He was born in Indonesia in 1965 and immigrated in 1985. My eyes rested on a crude photograph in the corner, caught between the pages, and the world seemed to tilt beneath me.
The face was younger and softer, as if from another time. But no matter where, I recognized her.
Mrs. Chen. But at the moment she stood before me as Lin Weila, smiling as she stood next to James in some long–ago park. Was this possible? I looked at the photo more closely. There were no other photos in the file. But the file stated that Lin Weila was the wife of James Young. Was this photo real?
This question was too big and heavy for our quiet afternoon. To be honest, I couldn’t be 100% sure that Mrs. Chen was James‘ wife. But if she was, what did it mean?
At least, it made sense why the kidnappers had chosen Kyle and me at the same time. If Mrs. Chen and James worked at my and Kyle’s homes respectively.
I leafed through the other documents. Mum had made a timeline in another file.
March 1995: James is hired as a family chauffeur
June 1995: First suspicious bank transfer
August 1995: Kidnapping
But just because they were married and worked for two wealthy families, that was still too far–fetched a reason for kidnapping. And they weren’t the ones in charge. Someone must have been directing them.
My own life had also changed in unexpected ways. From the little girl in the warehouse to Kyle’s secretary and then his wife. Now I was divorced from Kyle, even though I was pregnant with his child. Another thought suddenly occurred to me: Mrs. Chen had taken such good care of me after my last miscarriage. Had she ever been pregnant? The photos in the folder didn’t show any children, but only covered a few years. What other parts of her life were hidden?
I picked up the photo again and scrutinized the smiling young woman next to James. Had Mrs. Chen really been h…g and pretending all along? She had been kind to me, I couldn’t deny that

“So many questions,” I sighed. The pressure of the gas immediately on my leg brought a sense of relief. “I know, mate. You think I should just ask her, don’t you?”
“His tail wagged a little, and Gas seemed to agree. But he had a polti For better or worse, lay everything out in the open.
My gaze returned to the folder. Mrs. Chen was most likely Lin Wel James’s wife, and she was inextricably linked to the events that had shaped my life. But evidence was not always the same as the truth, was it? Just as Taylor’s perfect social photographs did not reflect her true nature, these documents might not capture he complexity of Mrs. Chan’s story.
I thought of the support she had given me during my marriage to Kyle. When I was too stressed to eat, she always quietly added more food to my plate. When Kyle’s social engagements became overwhelming, she always found ways to give me a break. These small acts of kindness seemed incredibly sincere at the time
