Kane POV
"I can't believe you are here." I breathed as I wrapped my arms around Charlotte; my hands instinctively travelled over her, drawing her closer until her beautiful baby belly pressed against me. Tears welled in my eyes as I took her in—she was utterly breathtaking.
"I have needed to see you all day... and now you are here!" I gushed, not caring how pathetic I sounded.
Was this a cruel trick my mind was playing?
"It's her." Rolo panted needily.
"It's me." She whispered, her voice catching in her throat.
"I am sorry, Charlotte." I moaned into the nape of her neck because the way Connie had spoken to her, the disdain and disrespect she had shown, ignited a fire of rage within me that I promised myself to address. But for now, my focus, my entire being, was centred on undoing the harm and making Charlotte feel cherished, like the goddess she truly was.
Carefully, I lifted her onto the kitchen countertop, a grin spreading across my face as she parted her legs, inviting me closer. Stepping in, I nuzzled between her thighs the best I could, my front pressing gently against her growing belly. The sight of her, so radiant and beautifully pregnant, overwhelmed me with a mixture of awe and love.
"You look even more incredible," I whispered truthfully. "How is that possible?" I uttered; my words paused, however, sensing her tension in my hold.
"Do you remember?" I asked softly, stroking her bump as I gazed up into her eyes. Hope surged through me, desperate for her to recall the depth of love that had always bonded us. The thought that she might not recall was too painful to bear, a sharp ache that I couldn't shake off.
Her eyes briefly flashed purple, signalling the presence of Sage. Inside me, Rolo howled with a longing that shook me to my core because his yearning for his mate was mirrored in my own heart.
"I'll take that as a yes," I smirked, my hands touring up her back under her t-shirt, revelling in the feel of her skin beneath my fingers.
"Why?" she whispered, her eyes brimming with tears. I hated she felt she needed to shed.
"To protect you..." I began, but she shook her head, cutting off my words with a smile, her gesture sending ripples of confusion through me.
"Why are you talking..." Her voice was a mere whisper, laced with an ache that echoed my own. "Why are you talking and not kissing me?" she finished her words, a balm to the turmoil inside me.
"How rude of me," I laughed as a profound sense of relief washed over me, dissolving the knots of confusion and pain that had tightened in my chest. Nodding, I leaned in without hesitation, surrendering to her command. Our lips met in a kiss that was both a salve and a spark, reigniting the deep, fervent connection that had always existed between us.
In that kiss, every moment we had spent apart seemed to dissolve, pulling us back into the orbit we were always meant to share. As our tongues married together in a lovers tango, the world around us faded, leaving nothing but the warmth of her lips and the undeniable passion this little creature invoked within me.
