Chapter 138 Camila, Leave With Me
Chapter 138 Camila, Leave With Me
William slumped into the cold iron chair, his hands hanging limply at his sides. His eyes were clouded with confusion, as if lost in a fog he couldn’t escape. He couldn’t understand how things had spiraled to this point.
He had always prided himself on keeping the bigger picture in mind, tirelessly working to ease Camila’s hostility toward Agnes. But his efforts had completely backfired.
Not only had he failed to win Camila over, but now he had become the target of that madman Giovani. He didn’t expect to end up in a detention center as the future heir of the Connor Group.
William’s frown deepened, his frustration mounting. If Camila hadn’t caused a scene at Lindsey’s birthday banquet, he and Agnes wouldn’t have ended up in this mess.
He didn’t understand why Camila, once so gentle and understanding, turned into someone so unreasonable after five years in prison. She was nothing like the woman he used to know.
But no matter how hard he tried, William couldn’t foresee the day when Emily would return and the truth would come to light. On that day, he would be consumed by an overwhelming sense of shame for the thoughts and words he held today.
All those moments when he had unthinkingly defended Agnes would transform into sharp, merciless blades. Each one would stab straight into his heart, leaving it torn and bleeding, and the pain was unbearable.
The crushing weight of guilt would follow him like a shadow, haunting him for the rest of his life. It would become a shackle that he could never break.
By then, even if he were to bow before Camila and beg for her forgiveness, he wouldn’t earn so much as a glance from her. The thought of being ignored and despised by her was already more agonizing than death.
Yet, at this moment, William stubbornly clung to his beliefs, refusing to see any fault in his actions.

At the Campbell residence, everyone focused on Camila, their eyes filled with unhidden care and affection.
Even a small burn was enough to tug at everyone’s heartstrings, making each person present ache for her.
Lindsey gently held Camila’s reddened wrist, her eyes brimming with worry as she urged, “Giovani, take Camila to the hospital right now.”
Camila wasn’t used to being cared for like this–it felt unfamiliar, yet strangely comforting. It was so soothing that she found herself wanting more of it.
Deep down, she even dared to imagine a future where she could stay by Lindsey and Giovani’s side for the rest of her life.
But reality hit her like a cold splash of water, extinguishing her fleeting fantasy. She knew Lindsey wanted to match her with Giovani, but her body was already falling apart, like a fragile building ready to collapse.
She couldn’t bring herself to drag Giovani down with her. She thought he deserved so much more than someone as damaged as her.
Camila’s expression turned serious as she said earnestly, “Lindsey, I’ve already applied some ointment. I’m really fine. Please don’t worry about me anymore.”
But Lindsey still couldn’t rest at ease. Her brows furrowed slightly as she said with heartfelt concern, “Burns aren’t something to take lightly. If it leaves a scar, it’ll be hard to deal with later.
“You’re in fragile health, so this is the perfect chance to get a full check–up and put everyone’s mind at ease.”
After hearing about the abuse Camila suffered in prison, including losing a kidney, Lindsey couldn’t stop worrying about her health and had been trying to arrange a full check–up.
However, the family had been caught up in various matters recently, leaving her unable to follow through.
Now that Giovani was finally home, Lindsey didn’t want to miss this chance and was determined to prioritize the check–up.
A flicker of complex emotions flashed through Camila’s eyes.
She knew Lindsey’s concern was genuine, but she also understood that if she underwent a full check–up, the scars fro
her time in prison and the truth about her hearing loss would inevitably come to light.
She couldn’t stand the idea of becoming a burden to the Campbell family, of disrupting the delicate warmth and peace they had worked so hard to create.

“Lindsey, I’m really fine,” Camila said firmly, her one resolute
Seeing her unwavering stance, Lindsey sighed helplessly and chose not to press further.
She reached out, gently stroking Camila’s hand with affection, and she softly reminded her, “Promise me, if you ever feel sick, you’ll tell me right away. Don’t keep it to yourself, okay?”

“Okay.” Camila nodded obediently, lowering her gaze to hide the sudden mist that clouded her eyes.
She didn’t want Lindsey to see her vulnerability or let her care become a heavy burden.
When she looked up again, the tears in her eyes had been forcibly suppressed, replaced by a warm and resilient smile. Her gaze slowly swept over everyone present, and what she saw was full sincerity and care in their eyes.
At that moment, a warm current suddenly surged in Camila’s heart. She suddenly felt that perhaps God wasn’t that harsh on her, after all.
Although she had a weak bond with her biological parents and suffered a lot, there was still a group of people in this world who treated her wholeheartedly. This warmth was enough for her to withstand all the cold in the world.
Then she flashed a brilliant and sincere smile.
At that moment, the sunlight filtered through the spacious and bright floor–to–ceiling windows and fell on her, casting a warm yellow glow over her. It made her look in excellent health. Indeed, she seemed to be in no serious condition.
Lindsey looked at her and said softly, “Camila, you must be hungry. I will go and make breakfast for you together with Keira and Hazel.”
With that, without waiting for Camila to decline, Lindsey stood up. She also didn’t forget to invite Lucy to sit down warmly
and chat with Camila.
The living room was now left with just Camila, Lucy, and Giovani. Lucy had so much she wanted to say to Camila, but the words just wouldn’t come out.
Giovani sat quietly on the sofa, his presence radiating an undeniable authority. It was as if an invisible weight filled the room, pressing on Lucy and making it impossible for her to speak. Every time she tried, the pressure forced her to swallow her words.
Her eyes darted around before she suddenly said, “Camila, I noticed so many gorgeous flowers blooming outside the villa when I came in. Want to go check them out with me?”
Camila didn’t think twice. She stood up with a smile, grabbed Lucy’s hand, and led her toward the door. “Those flowers outside? Mr. Campbell had them specially picked and planted,” she said, her voice brimming with delight:
Her tone naturally lifted as she spoke, and though she didn’t outright praise him, the happiness in her words was impossible to miss.
Lucy glanced at her discreetly and noticed the sweet expression on her face. A pang of unease struck her. She wondered if Camila had fallen for that
Sure, Giovani seemed perfect on the surface, but Lucy’s instincts screamed that he was dangerous, unpredictable, and impossible to read.
She tilted her head slightly, sneaking a glance at Giovani from the corner of her eye. He was watching them intently, his eyes narrowed, as if analyzing their every move.
Lucy’s heart skipped a beat. It felt like being a helpless fawn caught in the sight of a predator. Her whole body stiffened under the weight of his gaze.
It wasn’t until they stepped out of the villa that the suffocating sense of being watched finally began to fade.
