Chapter 129
Lorraine replied, “I don’t know him at all, but he introduced himself as Benjamin. He was quite handsome as well.”
She then remembered that Logan had a fragile ego and disliked hearing her praising other men, so she added, “Not as handsome as you, though.”
Logan quickly caught on to the mention of Benjamin. And if it was a Carol related to Benjamin, then it was definitely the woman known as Thousand Faces.
Logan knew a lot about Benjamin’s past as he was Benjamin’s arch–nemesis.
The woman named Carol was the daughter of a butler to the Hathe family. Despite being two years younger than Benjamin, the two of them grew up together as childhood sweethearts.
The two of them fell in love with each other as they got older. Carol was popular with the boys, and the stubborn and arrogant Benjamin often argued with her as a result of it. It also did not help that Benjamin’s parents strongly opposed their relationship.
The seniors within the Hathe family believed that Carol was unworthy of Benjamin as she was just the daughter of a butler serving the Hathe family.
Carol became Glendale’s most renowned makeup artist at the age of 23. Her proficiency in makeup was so advanced that anyone who had undergone her touches would not even be recognized by their own loved ones.
Despite her accomplishments, however, Carol was still deemed unfit to be Benjamin’s wife.
Logan often thought about how Carol would’ve been hailed as a master of disguise had she been able to employ her skills back then.
Carol herself loved changing up her own appearance from time to time, which often made it extremely difficult for others to recognize her. Over time, she earned the renowned title of Thousand Faces.
Carol’s father worked as a butler for the Hathe family, and her mother also worked for the Hathes as a housekeeper. They were both promptly fired by the elders of the Hathe family and were forced to bring Carol away from Glendale.
At the same time, the elders of the Hathe family also deliberately caused a misunderstanding between Carol and Benjamin. As a result, Benjamin did many things that hurt Carol, eventually leaving her heartbroken and causing their separation.
Everyone thought that Thousand Faces had become a taboo topic for Benjamin as he would often explode with anger at the mere mention of anything related to Carol.
As time slowly passed, no one dared to mention Carol ever again.
After listening to Lorraine talk about how Benjamin had mistaken her for Carol, Logan realized that his arch–nemesis had never once let go of Carol in his heart.
In fact, Benjamin had been unable to move on. The fact was that he missed her so much to the point of madness, possibly a result of the regret wearing down on his heart for a decade after everything he had done to her.
Logan also finally realized why the 35–year–old Benjamin had remained single no matter how much the Hathe family’s elders had urged him to marry.
Logan was younger than Benjamin by four years. He was also already an adult when Benjamin and Carol first fell in love and had heard plenty of rumors surrounding the couple.
Logan believed that Benjamin deserved it for all he had done to Carol, and he held not a single tinge of sympathy for his arch–nemesis.
But of course, Logan did not admit the fact that he knew Benjamin personally, let alone reveal Benjamin’s identity. “Benjamin? Sounds familiar. Not sure where I heard it, though.”
Lorraine smiled and replied, “It’s fine if you can’t remember. There are plenty of folks named Benjamin, after all. You might not be thinking of the exact same person I met earlier in the day even if you do remember someone.”
Logan just nodded in response.
As Lorraine moved the dishes back to the kitchen, Logan brought over a rag to wipe down the dining table.
