“Evie, what brings you here?” Cole asked, his voice filled with a happy surprise. 

“Oh, what’s the matter, Grandpa? You don’t want me here? Maybe I should just head back?” Evangeline teased, but her body language said the opposite. 

She sat on the couch next to Cole and tossed her bag onto the coffee table without a second thought. She clearly was not going anywhere. 

“Now that you’ve made it here, where do you think you’re going?” said Cole, half–joking, half–worried, as he grabbed her hand. “Evie, don’t forget, you’re always welcome here, anytime. I’m just concerned about you, you know? You’re having a baby, and you should be taking it easy.” 

Evangeline caught the worry in Cole’s eyes and quickly reached out to give his hand a reassuring pat. You’re fretting over nothing, aren’t you? This little one inside me is tough as nails. Mrs. Lewis even told me it’s better to keep moving when you’re pregnant, instead of sitting around like everyone says. It’s good for the baby, as long as I’m up to it!” 

Cole, who was a man through and through, did not know much about pregnancy and was instantly curious. “Why’s that? And who’s this Mrs. Lewis? She’s hot some kind of troublemaker, is she?” 

Evangeline could not help but feel touched by his concern, and she quickly set his mind at ease. “Dol look like I’d be easily fooled? I can tell when someone’s looking out for me. At first, I thought Mrs. Lewis’s advice was odd, but she explained that if you don’t move around, you won’t have an appetite. And without eating, where’s the nutrition for the baby going to come from? It made sense to me, so I decided to stay 

active.” 

Cole nodded, seeing the logic in it. Even so, he could not help adding a word of caution. “Sure, that makes sense, but don’t overdo it. I’ve heard the first three months can be a bit risky, and you’ve got to think about being a mom now. You’ve got to take extra care!” 

It was not his place to give advice on pregnancy, he knew that. However, Evangeline’s mother was gone, and there was not a single woman of the older generation to step in. His sons were too wrapped up In their work to think about those things. So, it fell to him to speak up, even if it meant being a bit forward. 

Evangeline nodded with a smile. “Got it, I know!”
