Hearing someone talking bad about her daughter, Maria paused. She then said awkwardly to Elinor, "Well, well. Elinor, why don't you go back to your room and practice calligraphy? Don't make the adults embarrassed here."
Elinor went upstairs unsteadily with teary eyes. Dixon frowned, feeling tired. He sighed, and keeping walking out.
"Are you still leaving?"
Old Mrs. Borris yelled. "You stop! Do you really want to break the family apart for Sonia?"
He did it not for Sonia, but for himself. He is fed up with his grandmother being a total control freak!
Dixon didn't want to hurt the old lady. Gnashing his teeth, he didn't say anything, while walking out faster than before. His grandma couldn't catch up. She then grabbed Helena's arm maliciously. "Look at the good son you have taught!"
"Mom..." Being blamed, Helena was felt a little wronged. "Dixon is a grown-up now. He could make his own decisions. You can't take him as a little boy, telling him what to do..."
"Do you mean that I am wrong as a grandmother?" Old Mrs. Borris raised her voice, "I'm doing it for his own good and for our family. Without marrying into the Borris family, would you be a rich housewife? Would you have the opportunity to raise Dixon?"
Helena turned pale, and stopped talking.
Old Mrs. Borris talked to herself. No one knew who she's warning. "Every one learns to make decisions now. They don't know who is in charge. As long as I am alive, every one has to listen to me!"
Dixon's grandfather, old Mr. Borris, passed away a few years ago. Because of the wealthy family, old Mr. Borris was a playboy when he was young. Old Mrs. Borris was very irritated, which makes her personality that tends to go extreme. She now firmly believes everyone in the family has to listen to her.
Maria panicked. Old. Mrs. Borris likes her so much because Elinor is one of the family. What if...someone checked out that she's actually not Dixon's son?
She went upstairs to Elinor's room. Little Elinor was reading textbooks. She had a palm-sized face, which is pale. She also has thin lips, light eye-color. Maria was afraid that if Elinor grows up, those facial features would become more and more obviously indicating that she's not a Borris. What would they do?
Elinor found that her mother was staring at her. She looked up. Seeing the little face without a trace of similarity to Dixon, Maria slapped her daughter.
Elinor covered her face. Her tear rolled down. She's afraid, and also confused about how did she irritate her mommy. Why would she slap her without any reason...
Maria sat in the wheelchair, screaming at the top of her voice, pulling Elinor's hair, "Why are you not the daughter of Dixon, why!"
The woman abused her daughter crazily, using all her strength. Elinor knew now she's facing with a stranger. Shivering, she didn't dare to make any noise.
Once she made a noise, her mommy would beat her harder.
She knew that she was not the daughter of Mr. Borris. However, her mommy wanted her to pretend. She let her call him daddy. She did everything she could. But why...why would her mommy hit her...
The little girl kept shaking, and then almost begged for mercy. "Mom, don't beat me, mom..."
Maria stopped, gasping, "Sure, I won't hit you, in case that Dixon's grandma see your wound and gets suspicious. I won't hit you..."
She lit a cigarette. Then she tore open Elinor's clothes and pressed the cigarette hard on her back. Elinor convulsed. Her face was pale, full of cold sweat. Clenching her teeth, she didn't dare to say it hurts.
Maria stopped until Elinor's back was covered with scars. She then let her go. The little girl trembled, shivering and crying.
