After hanging up, a calm smile appeared on Rue’s face.
Having tricks up her sleeves was her favorite thing to do because only then would she feel safe.
Jodie opened the door with a bowl of spaghetti in her hands. "Ian, the pasta is done. Come have some."
She set the spaghetti in front of Ian and stared blankly at the phone on his table. "Ian, did someone call you just now?"
Ian looked at Jodie and shook his head. "No, I was just looking at the time."
As he looked up, he caught a glimpse of Jodie trying to hide her gnarly-looking wounds on her hands.
"Jodie, what happened to your hands?"
Jodie retracted them. "It's nothing, I had an accident."
Ian looked away. "Be careful next time. If mom and dad saw, they will be sad for a while again."
Jodie nodded sincerely. "Alright, Ian, I know."
Meanwhile, Rachel poured a glass of water for Ziggy after they returned to the apartment. "Baby, you must be tired. Have some water."
Ziggy was holding his glass in his hands for a long time without drinking. Instead, he looked at Rachel.
"Mommy, you’ve never mentioned your family to me. The marriage between the Bluemels and the Bennets that swept the entire Orange Country, are they your family?"
Rachel lowered her head at Ziggy's questions. "No, I have no family other than you, Ziggy."
Ziggy set down his glass of water and hugged Rachel who was crouched in front of him. "Mommy, you had it rough."
Rachel kept quiet, silently acknowledging Ziggy's assumptions.
Ziggy turned around with his back to Rachel and a flash of cruelty appeared in his eyes. 'I will not let those bullies get away from this, absolutely not!'
"Alright, baby. That's the past, I don't want to constantly bring it up. Let's go wash up and sleep! You still have school tomorrow."
Ziggy nodded compliantly. "Okay."
At midnight, after Rachel fell into a deep sleep, Ziggy crawled up from the bed.
He switched on his laptop and logged onto the unknown website, filled with mystery.
His fingers skittered all over the keyboard like hundreds of shadows hovering over it, punching each key with a speed that no one could follow.
The screen stopped at newspaper articles from five years ago. Reading articles after articles that slandered Rachel, he squinted.
His mouse cursor stopped at one of them titled, 'The Bennets Chase Away Pregnant Daughter.'
Seeing the pictures in the article, Ziggy's hand tightened around the mouse as his temper rose.
In the picture, Rachel was pulling a moderately-sized luggage bag on her own while the reporters and paparazzi were pushing against her. Although the luggage fell on the ground, Rachel did not care for it as she adamantly covered her belly, which was him.
"The Bennets, huh..."
A calculative smile showed on Ziggy's face as he started typing. A moment after, his screen blacked out.
