Chapter 135 He Would Never Let It Go
Lewis frowned in response, having heard something that displeased him. He even shot Sierra a warning look as well.
The latter didn’t seem to have noticed the look. She pouted before whining, “Alright, we should hurry up and head over there already. You promised to dedicate these few days to me and that you won’t be doing anything else.”
Lewis pocketed his phone without a word. Then, he walked over to the designated spot with
Sierra.
Naturally, Seth received word of Lewis going on a business trip with Sierra.
Daphne was miffed when she heard about it. She complained in frustration, “I can’t believe he’s in the mood to accompany his lover at a time like this! Seriously, how the hell is he this relaxed?”
Seth just smiled quietly. “Why else would he do that? He’s washing his hands off this incident, “he thought.
“Seth, this incident is starting to blow up.” Daphine walked over to Seth’s side with a tablet before passing it to him.
Both of them had moved out of Alvarez Manor yesterday. Right now, the family of three was currently living in another mansion. Daphne was clearly in a better mood as well.
The guilt she harbored for Lily’s death had completely dissipated by now.
Seth glanced at the tablet before returning it to Daphne. “That’s normal. This isn’t a small deal, after all. Now that Derek lost both of his children in the fire, he won’t let this matter go.”
Derek’s efforts to keep Lily and the children’s tragedy in the public eye through the mass media yielded results. The entire city became consumed by the incident, and Alvarez Corp’s shares bore the brunt of the fallout, steadily declining over time.
“How are things with Dad?”
“It’s pretty difficult to determine what’s going to happen. When Lily went to the mansion, did she call Dad on the phone?”
Daphne thought for a moment. She recalled that Lily had indeed called Robert on the morning the tragedy broke out.
“Yes.”
“Then that settles it. Numerous housekeepers were eyewitnesses to the phone call. Besides, Dad displayed his anxiety and eagerness to have the shares transferred to himself that day. Right now, he’s the primary suspect. If the authorities still can’t locate the people who
kidnapped Lily, there’s a chance that he’ll-”
As Daphne delved into her recollection, the tragic events of that day became clearer. Lily’s tearful countenance mirrored her distress as she dialed a number, her voice echoing loudly with a sense of desperation. She pleaded with the person on the other end not to sign the contract, with numerous individuals in close proximity bearing witness to the emotionally charged conversation.
Coincidentally, Robert was the one Lily had called that day.
Despite Lily’s strong reluctance, Robert stubbornly went ahead and signed the contract. It came as no surprise that he was considered the primary suspect in this incident.
“Are you saying that Dad will be branded as the culprit if the kidnappers can’t be located?”
“More or less.” Seth glanced at Daphne from the corner of his eye.
The latter’s gaze was fixated on a corner, a mysterious glint in her eyes. No one knew what she was thinking.
A small smile crept upon Seth’s face slowly.
“Seth, I’m heading to the farmer’s market to buy some fresh produce. Please take care of Bambam at home,” Daphne suddenly said while drawing to her feet.
Seth nodded slightly. “Alright.”
Daphne quickly left the mansion once she was done speaking.
She drove to the farmer’s market and parked her car at the roadside without the intention of getting out of her car. Instead, she pulled out her phone anxiously and started scrolling through her contact list. Finally, she was able to locate a certain phone number.
Daphne didn’t hesitate to call that number.
A moment later, the call went through. Daphne quickly asked, “Where are you guys right now? Have you left Elysium?”
“Don’t worry. We left Elysium a long time ago. Miss Alvarez, we pride ourselves on being people of our word. Then again, you still owe us ten million dollars. When are you going to cough up the payment?”
“I’ll deal with it once this incident dies down. I can’t transfer you huge amounts for the time being. Otherwise, the police will suspect me. Don’t worry. I’ll keep the end of my bargain.”
Truth be told, Daphne was itching to wipe out the kidnappers, but she knew that killing more people would attract more unwanted attention from the authorities, so she could only use money to shut those kidnappers up.
However, the leader of the kidnappers wasn’t pacified by empty promises. “You should at least provide us with a timeframe, Miss Alvarez. You keep wanting us to wait for the payment, but
how long are you planning on keeping us waiting?”
“Why are you being so anxious? I told you, I’ll definitely pay up! Also, why did those three die in the fire?”
The man replied, “Didn’t you tell us to kill them? Miss Alvarez, are you planning on pinning the blame on me as well?”
“What the hell are you on about? When did I order you to kill them? You better tell me the truth right now! What the hell happened that day? You won’t get a penny out of me if you don’t do as I say!”
Of course, the leader became agitated the moment he heard Daphne’s threat. “You were the one who texted me with the order to kill them! What else could happen? You seem to underestimate my understanding of the gravity of murder compared to kidnapping.”
To put it bluntly, the leader knew that he and his gang would still be able to survive even if they got arrested by the authorities after kidnapping Lily and her children, seeing as they still had 20 million dollars to spend. Now that those hostages were dead, they found it difficult to splurge on their money and have fun.
Daphne felt as if her heart had stopped beating for a moment when she heard the leader’s
words.
She thought about the explanation for a long time. Could it be that she was the one who miscommunicated with the kidnappers, causing them to misunderstand her?
Daphne did personally hire those kidnappers and made contact with them. No one else knew what she had done except for herself. That was why she couldn’t think of any other reason behind this screw-up.
“Whatever. I just need you to hide well. Don’t contact me unless something urgent comes up.’ Once she was done talking, she ended the call immediately.
The agreed price was 20 million dollars. Daphne had transferred ten million dollars to them in two different transactions, so she had yet to pay another ten million.
People were willing to kill for others if they were offered a lucrative sum.
However, Daphne spent every day in sheer anxiety. That feeling grew significantly after hearing Seth’s reminder-she couldn’t allow those kidnappers to be found by the authorities, or else her life would be over.
After she was done with the phone call, Daphne calmed down before getting out of her car and heading into the farmer’s market.
Unbeknownst to her, Seth coincidentally dialed another phone number from the confines of the mansion at the exact same time.
“Trace down the coordinates of this phone number and find those people. Once you do, think
of a way to leak the information to Derek Moss.”
Once Seth was done speaking, he disconnected the call. Then, he turned around to look at the baby in the stroller.
His signature smile blossomed on his face once again as he reached out to touch Bambam’s
cheek.
The baby started giggling at the sight of his father. He even reached out to grab his finger.
