Chapter 137
Make Your Choice
Daphne gripped Lewis’ arm tightly. He did tell her that he would never abandon her, so she could only ask for his help now.
The latter looked down at her silently.
Tears glistened in Daphne’s eyes as she gazed back trustingly at him.
A moment later, Lewis averted his gaze and turned to look at Seth.
Both of them made eye contact with each other. An invisible battle broke out between the two men as they tried to dominate each other with their glares. The others might not know what was going on, but they could sense the change in the atmosphere.
“Drag them out of here for now,” Lewis ordered.
Soon, a few housekeepers came forward to drag the kidnappers away. After that, Lewis dismissed all the housekeepers.
Only four people remained in the living room after that.
When Nancy realized that the coast was clear, she finally spoke up. “Lewis, what should we do now?”
“What should we do?” Lewis stared at Seth before he chuckled all of a sudden. “Why don’t you ask Seth? He might have a better solution.”
The moment his words fell, Daphne turned around to look at Seth.
Seth’s eyes glinted before he smiled as well. “I don’t have a solution, Lewis. Daphne carried the plan out without my knowledge, after all. I only found out what happened just now.”
“Is that so? How did Derek track down those kidnappers, then? I’m quite curious about the reason.”
Seth’s brows furrowed as he pretended to speculate thoughtfully. “Well, I’m not sure about that. All Derek wants is to avenge his deceased wife and children. It’s completely normal for him to be able to track down those people.”
Lewis nodded in agreement. “That makes sense. Seth, now that your wife is about to get imprisoned, don’t you have anything to say about it?”
Seth paused for a moment, not knowing what to say all of a sudden.
It was a while before he finally replied, “To tell you the truth, I don’t know what to do either. I’d like to ask for your opinion, Lewis. After all, Daphne trusts you the most.”
They continued staring at each other, neither willing to relent. Daphne resembled a double- edged sword right now. If they could manipulate her properly, they would be able to take each
other down. If not, they might end up stabbing themselves in the guts.
“Both of you, stop shirking responsibility to each other! At least think of a way to save
Daphne!” Nancy urged anxiously from the side.
Lewis retorted calmly, “Mom, either Daphne or Dad has to get imprisoned. All of you should make your choice.”
Daphne spoke up immediately. “I can’t go to prison!”
However, Nancy started to hesitate. She couldn’t bring herself to choose between her husband. and her daughter.
“Mom!” Daphne called out to Nancy, her tone tinged with affection. It was an attempt to awaken Nancy’s maternal love for her.
The older woman could only look at Daphne with a conflicted expression.
Daphne continued, “Dad has many mistresses, but you only have one daughter!”
That sentence finally crippled Nancy’s mental barrier, causing her to collapse to the ground immediately.
Clearly, Nancy had made up her mind.
Daphne then looked at Seth, her eyes holding a meaningful sparkle.
If Seth refused to take her side, she no longer had to guess who was the one that stabbed her
in the back
Seth stared back at Daphne, his eyes glinting as well. A small crack finally appeared on his immaculate facade.
“Seth, will you take my side?” the young woman asked, her tone quivering slightly.
Seth stared at her for a long time before finally flashing a small smile. “Of course.”
A smile curled on Lewis’ lips as well. “Isn’t this great?”
Seth’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. A streak of murderous intent even flashed across his eyes momentarily.
Lewis withdrew his arm from Daphne’s grip before approaching Seth slowly. He continued smiling as he said, “Seth, you should pay more attention to your wife. Deal with this incident properly, yeah?”
“How should I deal with it, then?” Seth did his best to maintain his smile. “Derek did record the exchange just now.”
“He shouldn’t have
gone far.”
Lewis’ voice was very light, as though he was talking about something mundane.
Seth’s smile started to fade away. “Layla is also an issue.”
“Seth, you’re a smart man. Can’t you deal with something as simple as this? Either that, or you don’t care about Daphne at all.”
Even though Seth was getting oppressed by Lewis, he couldn’t help but smile once again. This time, it was a grin. Then again, the more he grinned, the more emotions he needed to conceal.
Of course, grins were perfect for concealing one’s emotions.
“Naturally, I do.”
The moment Lewis heard Seth’s answer, he started chuckling lightly all of a sudden. Then, he extended an arm and placed his slender hand on Seth’s shoulder. “Thank you for your hard work, Seth.”
“There’s no need to be this courteous with me, Lewis.”
Seth then stood up and left Alvarez Manor without looking back.
As Lewis watched Seth’s silhouette leaving his line of sight, his smile gradually dissipated on the spot.
Daphne finally heaved a sigh of relief. She approached Lewis’ side and asked, “Lewis, w-will he really help me out?”
After all, she and Seth had already lived together for two years. Naturally, she knew very well that her husband’s reaction was peculiar.
Lewis ripped his gaze away from the direction Seth had disappeared in before turning to look at his younger sister. “Daphne, you should learn how to see through your husband.”
The woman’s heart skipped a beat out of surprise. “W-What?”
Lewis reached out to tuck a stray lock behind Daphne’s ear. “My dear sister, you can be so silly sometimes. Why are you asking me a question you know the answer to?”
Daphne just stared at her older brother while feeling the color draining from her face slowly. She didn’t want to admit that Seth had betrayed her, but Lewis’ words were akin to a death
sentence to her.
“Why” All strength seemed to have seeped out of Daphne’s body as she stumbled backward before collapsing onto the couch.
Lewis didn’t provide her with an explanation. Instead, he turned on his heel and walked away.
Nancy quickly asked, “Lewis, where are you going?”
