What Separates Me and You novel Chapter 295

Chapter 295 She Was Scared of the Dark

Seth trampled on the grass as he headed toward the mansion slowly.

The moment he pushed the rusted iron gates open, they let out a loud creak.

It was easy for him to wade through the tall weeds.

There wasn’t any trace of a smile on Seth’s face when he stopped in front of the mansion. If Lewis had been around, he would have recognized the sadness in his eyes.

Seth stood at the doorway for a long time. A gentle gust of breeze welcomed him, lightly caressing his short hair and the hems of his tuxedo jacket.

The stark whiteness of the tuxedo looked incredibly jarring amidst the forest of greenery around him, not to mention it seemed quite unnatural as well. It felt as though his presence was a discordant mistake, an aberration in the creator’s design of this world.

A while later, Seth finally started moving toward the main entrance.

The door wasn’t locked, so it was easy for him to enter the mansion.

The interior was in a state of extreme disarray. Sticky cobwebs and thick layers of dirt covered almost every inch of the place. As Seth surveyed the rooms, all he saw was chaos upon chaos. This particular mansion had earned a notorious reputation as the haunted mansion of Hardington. A group of university students had ventured here for exploration in the past, only for the two of them to lose their sanity as a result of their ill-fated adventure.

Ever since that incident, no one dared to set foot in this place.

It didn’t get demolished for certain reasons, so it got abandoned instead.

Seth was very familiar with the mansion. Despite the disarray, he easily located the staircase, maneuvering through the mess with familiarity.

With every step he took, countless bugs rushed out from where he landed and skittered in all directions.

The man went to the second floor. As he walked down the corridor slowly, his gaze scanned every inch of his surroundings as though he could still see the mansion’s former glory.

For example, there used to be a painting hanging on that very wall, and a potted plant used to take up this particular corner.

However, there was nothing left in the mansion. Its interior was bare for all to see, not to mention it was constantly shrouded in damp, cold darkness.

Even if it was a bright and sunny day, the sun’s rays would never be able to penetrate into the mansion.

Seth opened every door in the mansion, making sure to study each room carefully as though he could restore its furnishings just by looking at it.

Once he arrived at the end of the corridor, he reached out to open the door. As soon as he did, he was stunned by what he saw.

There was a person sitting on the abandoned bed in that room.

She was wearing a white sweater and had her hair put up in a cute bun, and her back was turned to him the whole time.

Seth widened his eyes by a fraction.

“Josephine?” he called out subconsciously.

The woman sitting on the bed turned her head to look at him.

Both of them made eye contact with each other at that moment. The silent atmosphere surrounding them became even quieter. It was as though they could hear each other’s breathing despite their distance.

Josephine gazed at him, a familiar hint of confusion appearing in her eyes.

Seth was silent for a moment before taking wide strides in her direction. Coming to a stop in front of the woman, he grabbed her by the shoulders as a look of excitement appeared on his face; even his tone took on an emotional edge as he exclaimed, “Why are you here?”

Josephine just stared at him unblinkingly. After a while, she mustered the strength to push against him, breaking free from his grasp.

Seth’s confusion flickered across his face momentarily, but understanding dawned on him quickly. Josephine had forgotten everything once again.

“I’m your older brother.”

Josephine pursed her lips, clearly not believing his words.

Seth patiently spent some time convincing Josephine that he was indeed related to her. Finally, he was able to dispel all traces of confusion which plagued her mind and made her believe that he was her actual brother.

Once the vigilance in her eyes faded away, Seth finally took a seat next to her on the bed, not caring about how filthy It was. “How did you get here? Did you stay here the whole time?”

Josephine nodded in response. She couldn’t remember how she got to this mansion in the first place.

Seth continued, “We’ve been looking for you for the past two days. Did you not leave this mansion at all?”

The woman nodded again before gesturing, “What is this place?”

Seth was stunned for a moment. When he looked at her this time, it was filled with a hint of contemplation. “You don’t know where you are right now?”

Josephine tilted her head and thought for a moment. In the end, she still shook her head because she couldn’t remember what this place was.

The man let out a light chuckle. “If you didn’t know what this place is, then how did you get here in the first place?”

Josephine gestured, “I don’t know.”

Her companion stared at her fingers silently for a long time before he murmured under his breath, “You don’t know.”

That phrase sounded extremely sarcastic for some reason.

Josephine could only stare back in confusion.

Seth couldn’t be bothered to explain anything to her, so he asked, “You’ve been stuck here for a while. Are you hungry?”

The

young woman rubbed her stomach before nodding in response.

If it wasn’t for her being too hungry, she would have gotten up and left long ago. She only continued to sit on the bed because she was famished to the point that she couldn’t move a muscle.

After all, she was still waiting for that person to bring her her meal.

At that time, Josephine’s face was covered in grime. Her white sweater was dotted with dirt and ash, whereas her bun was already falling apart, Strands of hair could be seen poking out everywhere in all directions.

Just one glance at her was more than enough to prove that she was a pampered young woman who got lost in the wild.

Fortunately, Josephine never left the mansion. Otherwise, she might have gotten kidnapped by someone else. To make things worse, she’d think of that kidnapper as a good person.

Seth must have thought of something else, which led to him asking, “Did you encounter anything strange ever since you arrived at this place?”

Josephine thought that he was asking her a peculiar question. She shook her head in response.

“Are you afraid?”

This time she nodded immediately. It was natural for her to be scared as there wasn’t anyone accompanying her in this dark mansion at all. She was afraid of the dark.

Besides, there was also a …

Just as Seth was about to continue speaking, he heard a flurry of footsteps coming from the outside. His expression shifted as he turned his head to look at the doorway.

The footsteps were very light, as though the person was making an effort to remain undetected.

Two minutes later, the footsteps abruptly ceased, the sound disappearing into complete silence.

Seth drew to his feet immediately. “Wait for me here. I’ll go check the situation out.”

Josephine clutched his sleeve reflexively in response.

He patted her head while reassuring her, saying, “It will be fine. I’ll be just right at the doorway. I promise I won’t leave.”

She finally released his sleeve slowly after hearing his promise.
