What Separates Me and You novel Chapter 37

Chapter 37 Josie Will Be Bullied
Seeing the dagger in Lewis’ hand, the two men shrunk back, extremely frightened.
“We…we’ve really never seen you before. Did you get the wrong people?”
Lewis smiled ambiguously at them, bringing the blade to one of their jaws. “Think carefully.”
The cold dagger sent a shiver down his spine, and he could even feel the sharpness of the blade.
The thug froze and recalled all recent events. Although they were guilty of quite a few crimes, it wasn’t bad enough to have offended this big shot.
Could it be last night?
His eyes widened as realization hit. He looked at Lewis in fear. “Is it…because of that mute?”
“Mute?” Lewis’ smile was cold.
“No, no. That beautiful woman last night…we didn’t do anything…”
“Nothing?”
The thug stuttered, “Yes, no…nothing. We did think of doing something, but…but I felt blood, so I didn’t continue…” He thought if he explained everything well, he would sound more believable. But once Lewis heard the word “felt”, the smile disappeared off his face, leaving only the intent to kill.
“Which hand?”
The thug swallowed hard. He didn’t dare tell him.
Before he could explain himself, he felt an excruciating pain coming from the palm of his hand and let out a heart-wrenching scream.
The dagger had pierced through the palm of his hand. Blood spread onto the floor. But that wasn’t the end, as Lewis slowly pulled the dagger out. The pain of the dagger being pulled out from his flesh was much worse than when he was stabbed the first time.
The pain was too much for him, and he repeatedly begged for forgiveness.
“Sir, I was wrong, please let me go!”
Lewis asked again, “Which hand?”
“This, thi…this hand.” His b*oody hand shook while he cried for forgiveness.
“Oh?” Lewis stabbed the dagger into the exact same wound. “This hand?”
His eyes rolled back from the pain as he groaned pitifully. He nearly fainted when he was awakened by another pain. A rotten smell had made Lewis let go of the dagger and stand up. The two men had soiled themselves.
Lewis turned to leave with Conrad following behind him.
“President Alvarez.”
Lewis took out a handkerchief and wiped his fingers, before saying calmly, “Open up the cages.”
“Yes…”
Conrad wiped off the sweat on his forehead. He remembered Lewis had left a dagger inside. He thought it was much crueler to give them hope of surviving than for them to just await their fate.
However, they were only thugs, and no one would notice even if they died. There wouldn’t be anything left of them anyway, since two men were certainly not enough to feed those wolves.
Josephine was at the hospital the whole afternoon-getting in line, getting an examination done, and waiting for her results.
It was almost dark outside when her results came out. The doctor was looking at her report and asked, “Where’s your family?”
Josephine typed on her phone, “They didn’t come.”
The doctor frowned. “You want to keep the baby, right?”
Josephine nodded.
“Can you be admitted?”
Josephine hesitated. If she was admitted, Lewis would find out.
The doctor understood her concern and said, “If you can’t stay here, I will prescribe some medication for you and the baby, and you should come back to get routine checkups. But only fate can decide whether your baby will survive.”
Josephine nodded. When Lewis took away her phone last night, she had lost all
hope. It seemed the heavens had given her a chance now that there was a glimmer
of hope.
Josephine went to collect her medication after the doctor wrote her a prescription. When she walked out of the hospital, she suddenly saw Nancy. Nancy was holding a child in her arms, waiting for somebody.
Josephine unconsciously tightened her grip on her medication and prescription. She walked around Nancy with her head lowered and left the hospital in a hurry.
When she got back to the mansion, Lewis was not home yet. She hid her medication well and started preparing dinner. She waited until midnight, when she was sure he wouldn’t be coming home, before eating some of the food that had turned cold.
When Josephine was alone, she didn’t like sleeping in her room. She preferred to be on the sofa, falling asleep to the sound of the television.
Just as she switched on the television, Avery called. Josephine was surprised. Although she didn’t know why Avery was calling at this hour, she picked up.
“You finally answered. Where have you been these days? My calls wouldn’t go through, and you wouldn’t reply to my texts. Hurry and check my messages.” With that, Avery hung up.
Josephine opened up the texting app and saw her messages. They were mostly asking where she had been.
Josephine made up a lie.
Avery replied with a voice recording, “I’m glad you’re okay. I’ve escaped from home, and my dad has frozen my accounts. Lend me some money.”
When Josephine heard had Avery didn’t have any money, she immediately
transferred the money Lewis had given her that afternoon, leaving only a thousand dollars for herself. She still had to go for checkups after all.
Josephine asked her if it was enough.
Her voice recording replied, “It’s enough, I’ll repay you after I earn some money.”
Josephine heard whooshing noises on the recording. She wondered if it was windy out, or if Avery was on her motorcycle.
Josephine was still worried and texted, “Do you have a place to stay?
This time, Avery replied after more than ten minutes. “Of course I do. I’m going to my racing buddy’s place. There’s plenty of space there. They’re having a competition in a few days; do you want to come root for me? Not only do I get a car if I win, but there. is also a one-million-dollar prize. After you get a divorce, I’ll take you around the world
with the car. What do you think?”
After Josephine arrived at the last sentence, her fingers trembled lightly. It was not only because of what Avery said. She thought back to six or seven years ago when Lewis liked racing as well. She would go every time and would root for him.
When she was eighteen, Lewis made a bet with another rich kid. He wanted the rich kid’s red, limited-edition sports car if he won, wanting to give it to Josephine as her coming-of-age present. He said she would be able to drive when she grew up, and that he wanted to teach her how to drive.
However, in the end, while they were racing, both of them never arrived at the finish line.
Josephine and a few other people had looked for them at the base of the mountain. The first person they found was the rich kid. He had fallen off the cliff together with his car. The car was wrecked so badly that the rich kid inside couldn’t be identified.
Afraid that Lewis had met the same fate, Josephine went deeper into the woods, searching for him the whole night. She tumbled and fell, getting scratches all over her body. In the end, she found him under a stack of broken branches. Lewis had quick reflexes and jumped out of the car when it drove off the cliff. He survived only because the branches c*shioned his fall when he fell on a tree.
Lewis was barely alive when Josephine sent a message to Sierra, giving their location and asking her to call for an ambulance. She helped stop his bleeding and carried him on her back, step by step, walking out of that mountain. As a small and weak young girl, she made the difficult trek out of the mountain while carrying a tall, strapping young man. Even she had never thought she could have managed the feat.
While he was on her back, she vaguely heard him say, “If I die, Josie will be bullied. Protect her for me.”
