When Fate Intervenes (Giselle and Anthony) novel Chapter 16

They reached an intersection with traffic lights just then. So, Anthony stopped the car and fixed Giselle with an intense gaze.

"I'm not unsatisfied with that. If you really insist on getting a divorce, I don't even mind if you ask for all of my money and assets in compensation.

"I'm not trying to threaten you either. I just have a lot of unanswered questions, and I'm feeling a little upset. That's all."

Giselle seemed quite shocked upon hearing Anthony say that he was a little upset.

"What are you upset about? Are you upset because I've tricked you into signing the papers? Or is it because I brought up divorce first?"

"That's not why I'm upset, Giselle."

Anthony chuckled bitterly as he took in the confused look on her face. There was a perplexing hint of dejection in his deep voice.

"I'm upset because you've misunderstood me. I'm upset because you won't even allow me a chance. I'm also upset because you and I will become complete strangers with this."

Giselle fell silent.

She did not really understand what Anthony was trying to say.

Anthony was supposed to be secretly in love with Melanie for many years. After Giselle divorced him, he should be proposing to Melanie right away.

Giselle could not understand why he was saying all these things to her in such a misleading tone of voice now.

Her silence offered Anthony a chance to share his true thoughts and feelings.

"Giselle, I've found out why you want to leave me after watching the video. You think I still like Melanie. Am I right?"

"It's true, isn't it?"

Her asking Anthony the question made him feel even more sorry.

He tried to suppress the sadness growing in him. His voice was soft, yet he spoke with remorse and total sincerity.

"I'm sorry. There were things I should've explained to you early on. Yet, I kept putting off doing it. You had that misunderstanding and were upset because of it for so long.

"That just comes to show that our marriage has always been a mistake made through reckless decisions. I'm asking for a divorce now because I'm trying to undo this mistake.

"Melanie has divorced from her previous partner, and she's also interested in you now. Shouldn't you support my decision and bravely go after the person you truly love? Why are you arguing with me over the issue of divorce?"

"That's because I've decided from the day Melanie got married to only see her as a friend. To me, our marriage has never been a mistake, nor have we decided on it recklessly.

"I truly wanted to spend the rest of my life with you."

Even though Giselle had known Anthony for many years, this was her first time hearing such heartfelt words that almost sounded like a confession from him.

However, she had snapped out of the ten-year-long illusion she was under. She would not fall for Anthony's words easily again.

She closed her eyes and avoided Anthony's gaze. Her tone was calm yet critical.

"Do those words even sound believable to you?"
